I used to have an iPhone 3G and instead of getting the iPhone 4, I got the Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) and was excited about all the extra things I am able to do with Android OS. I rooted, turned it into 3G wifi hotspot, etc etc. And then.... the tinkering got old and I just want my damn phone to just "work".. I don't want to have to root... and the apps suck. Yes, large developer companies have ported their games to lots of OSes, but for the most part, the apps are nasty and full of bugs and crap - and they LOOK like crap - there are no standards to follow. 2cents.

To the OP- I really like Apple products but I will never stand in line for one. I have friends that do for some reason. They are true fan boys that watch every keynote and treat Jobs like a god. I have (had) the first version and my wife stole it from me after Day 1.

Apple applications are written in Objective C, a subset of the C language. Android apps are written in Java. Yes, some software vendors write applications for both platforms. The key is the language they are written in. Objective C is hard core on memory management. The other factor is Apple's control and testing of all apps that are published. Google's Market Place on the other hand is kind of like the Wild Wild West at the moment. I have learned not to chose sides in the Apple vs Android debate. Having had hands on with both devices, I like features on both. My only problem with Android is reliability. I have seen first hand an app go astray and you couldn't even make a phone call. I doubt they will ever reach Apples reliability due to the nature of the product and the multitude of hardware platforms they are trying to support. It doesn't matter though. We all win in the end because the competition makes it better for all consumers no matter what your choice. Competition is a wonderful thing! These are my opinions but they are based on almost twenty years experience working in IT. I am currently a Product Analyst and assist in product evaluation, selection and guide businesses with their product selections. When people at work walk by my office and say "What computer should I buy" I always answer with a question - "What do you need it to do?" Once they explain I make my recommendation based on their need. Not yet, but we are close... (insert Dr. Evil laugh here) NO! I prefer Geek. Nerd infers that you are inept in social situations but have the same technical ability of the Geek. ![]() HKYStorm and Dai- Apple is making huge inroads in the business/enterprise. VPNs and certificates are making connectivity to the enterprise seamless. I tested my iPad with VPN connectivity to a cloud running a virtual PC desktop a couple of months ago. It was pretty amazing. OMG I just posted this in a car forum... ![]() Last edited by torpedo2k; 03-07-2011 at 06:36 PM. |

I'll be in line, just like I was for the iPhone4, iPad1, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G (I was 2 days late to the party on the iPhone 2G).
A) I'm a sucker for shiny new toys B) Having facetime/skype on the iPad is going to rock (I have family in Europe that I don't see very often [1/year]) C) The misses wants mine, so it gives me an excuse to upgrade ![]() |

I have a 32 GB wifi iPad that I use around the house for web surfing... that's really it. So I don't know if it will be worth it to upgrade.

For anyone who owns the first gen it really is not a huge upgrade. Only reason I am buying the new one is because I am a tech geek and a co-worker is buying my first gen which will help cover some of the costs of the purchase.

The iPad is great for social media and snippet reading, but as reader it falls drastically short of any reader that uses E ink. Having owned far too many Apple products for far too many years, I can say that I will wait for the next generation or the generation after that to purchase another iPad. I do like the Android driven tablets, and will likely purchase a second-generation Xoom or an equivalent from another brand.
For me, nothing replaces a higher-end laptop...yet.

I don't know if an upgrades to the iPad 2 is enough to justify buying. My iPad 1st gen iPad still works great, so no upgrade for me. I'll wait till it breaks. I still have a 2nd gen iPod Touch that's still going strong. Why spend money when you don't have to.

I agree, it is harder on the eyes, but not much more than looking at a computer monitor. If the Kindle had color e-ink and faster refresh rates, it would be a clear winner for e-reading. Turning the page on the current one is about as sophisticated as an etch-a-sketch. I still buy "real" books for this reason alone.

definitely valid i think. I mean im responding to you right now on my iphone.. cus i wont take my laptop into the bathroom. Enjoy that thought! haha
but one thing I will say (agree) whoever manages to capture the business and education side of this first should do well. Originally i said apple should go very hard after all education book publishers to release ipad version of their books. Kids wouldnt have to carry 60lb's every day. They wouldnt forget their book. They could take notes directly onto the books "page". with internal wi-fi or bluetooth antenna's per class rooms professors could disable itunes, browser, games etc and also disable books for tests or disable notes for open book tests.. or only show notes for no book tests! plus, publishers could make the books slightly cheaper as digital as it would save them printing costs and it would be available to more students as it wouldnt be as expensive. not just talking about highschool, or middle school but college. Only a few colleges have handed out ipads to new students. Sigh if Apple went aggresively after this their profits woulda been so much higher. For business though Blackberry may have an edge with their enterprise software. Their phones are already successfull for this and they could translate that into secure tablets. Unfortunately, the playbook seems pretty dull. |
