Internet tv, kicked the dish....literally
So lately I've gotten addicted to Hulu. New shows, news, talk shows etc anytime. Got rid of netflixs since all new releases are unable to streams and I have an hd DVD library. So I decided that dish network was taking a free ride. I cancelled them and decided to buy a syreaming media player for the bedroom. The other rooms and threather rooms have xbox, ps3 or CPU but bedroom and living room are a bit more causal. So I reaized that an easy task of buying a receiver caused 2 hours of web searching. I wanted something to stream my local files and hulu. I found some to stream hulu and Netflix but not local movies and music "roku" so looked again and found nexfli and stream local but NO hulu. Endless and endless... Finally found the perfect one, netgear nso550 I believe and every online site, eBay and even netgear are out of stock.
Finally found another of I preferred. I've looked at 30 different kinds by then, the WD HD TV Live with 1080 media player. Western digitals used to be a great company years ago to by hardsrives so I figured I'd take a risk on there 100 dollar player. It streams everything. Anybody else have hulu and streaming local movies mp4,mp3,divx, avi? If so, what do you use other than ps3 or computer or xbox

I built an HTPC for the living room, but have ordered a Boxee Box for the bedroom. (Yay for Christmas cash!)
I purchased one of the first Popcorn Hour devices a few years ago, but was not satisfied with the menu system (something that I've heard has gotten a lot better), so I replaced it with an actual htpc. I've found that most dedicated blu-ray players support internet content these days (netflix, hulu, amazon on-demand), and some will even handle network shares. The new ASRock Vision 3D devices look amazing, but will set you back a pretty penny. |

yea i have a blu-ray that streams netflixs, Pandora and cinema but THATS it. I actually canceled netflixs and found an amazing site for all my HD movies and Hulu keeps me up to date with all the new things on tv...
The boxee, if i read correctly, didnt support either HULU or stream Local files.... One of those i believe.

Do you mind sharing the name of the site, unless it is slightly less than legal? Because I <3 Netflix, but if there's a cheaper alternative that's still above the board legal, I'd consider switching.

the unfortunate thing is that netflix entire business is based on using tons of bandwith from ISP's who's media/television business they are rapidly eating away at. whats the deal with the net neutrality thing right now? who is the FCC siding with? I'm all for netflix and hulu to be able to continue doing what they are doing, but all i know is that if i was an ISP, i wouldn't be thrilled with the idea that there is a company out there using gobs of my bandwith and using my own network to put me out of business.

I built a HTPC as it gives me full control and can be setup to run better than any of the generic boxes (Boxee, roku, etc.)
I have: -Netflix -Hulu (Go back & forth on paying for the premium content) -Over the air (not currently setup as I have been lazy) Over the air with a proper HD tuner will give you all local channels for free and are 480P quality if not a bit better. Hulu gets me all my premium content and Netflix is streaming movies & Blu-ray. Now I also have a massive library of movies (350-400) in .ISO format on a custom built Windows Home Server. Streaming from the server to the HTPC is super easy. HTPC runs Windows 7 and auto loads into Windows Media Center -> Media Browser (look it up on Google) and when I select a disc to play from the server the HTPC mounts the image file and auto loads PowerDVD 8.

Re: obtaining movies (note: I "ONLY" download movies that I already own for backup purposes.): get a usenet subscription (ngroups.net etc) to download almost anything. "A FRIEND" of mine passed 2TB on Fios last month getting movies "he already owned") |

I am using XBMC Live and I have a FreeNAS server with all my media on it. All my movies are in ISO format. I also use my Blue-ray player for Hulu, Netflix, Pandora.
XBMC has some plug-ins as well. Everything is running over a 1Gig network. |
