I do love my XD-45. I have the 5" barrel with tactical light and a guide rod laser. The woman has an XD-45 in 4".

The only thing that I do not like is the lack of holsters available.

I was thinking about a Glock 36 for a carry because it's a single stack .45.

Personally, I will not use anything less than a .45.

I own the G36 and love it. 6+1 of .45 JHP is good enough to get you out of a bad situation.

voted for Glock; have used one of my friends' Glock .40 @ indoor & outdoor shooting ranges. Glocks are in the $600 range around here in LV, so that's pretty much at the top of the price range you are looking at. As long as you are comfortable with the whole no safeties thing, the Glock seems known for reliablility.

Glocks have a safety. It may be in the trigger, but it's there. As far as an external thumb safety, no they don't. But, neither does my XD. In the XD there is a grip safety and a trigger safety. The XD-M introduced a thumb safety. However, safeties hate me because I am a lefty. For that matter, holsters hate me for being a lefty

I will tell you that Chrissy shot the XD-40 before I bought her a gun and she liked my XD-45 better.

I don't know much about handguns, but my friend recommends a .45 cal Springfield 1911 with a steel frame.

Calif. senator calls for stronger gun controls

U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer called Tuesday for the nation to adopt more stringent regulations governing who can obtain permits for concealed weapons.

The move by the California Democrat was prompted by Saturday's shooting in Arizona that left six people dead and 14 others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, injured.

Boxer said states such as Arizona that don't screen people who want to carry concealed weapons aren't protecting their citizens. She wants to see an expansion of California's policy requiring law enforcement to approve such permits.

"I think a law like that ought to be federalized," Boxer said at a news conference at the Riverside County district attorney's office.

One way to exert pressure for passage would be to withdraw criminal justice grants from states that don't draft such rules, she said.

Arizona law allows any U.S. citizen 21 or older to carry a concealed weapon.

Boxer acknowledged that getting Democrats and Republicans to agree on gun laws wasn't easy. Still, she hoped they could make headway on another proposal by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., to ban high-capacity ammunition clips like the one linked to the shooting.

"Maybe we can come together just on the sale of those clips," she said.

Lautenberg has said he would introduce a measure to re-establish a prohibition that lapsed in 2004 on clips that feed more than 10 rounds at a time.

The influential National Rifle Association generally opposes attempts to limit the manufacture and sale of guns.
