Springfield XD-9 would be my recommendation for a first gun around the home, or for carry. 9 mil ammo isn't as cheap as it used to be, but it still supports the requisite time at the range better than any other option (22 cal aside).

I found this pretty interesting when I was shopping for a gun...
SPRINGFIELD ARMORY In short, they did a crazy torture test on the XD that included freezing the gun, covering it in dirt, mud, and degreasing it, and firing off rounds in between all of that. After they did that, they fired off another 1,700 rounds. 20,000 rounds in total, and not a single malfunction. I thought that was pretty damn impressive.

Oh I see how it is, when I recommend it you ignore me, but Red__Zed does and now you'll try it.

One cool thing about going to the range with the XDm 9mm is that the stock magazines hold 19 rounds (+1 in the chamber). It doesn't really matter for home defense, as you probably won't need that many rounds unless you can't aim for ****, or are defending against an army, but when going to the range it makes it nice, as you won't have to buy as many clips or reload your clips as often.
I'm not sure how comparable it is to other guns, but the XDm is really easy to disassemble and clean.

A simple shotgun works well for home defense. The minute an intruder hears the racking of a round they'll crap their pants and run. It's not something you can carry around with you but its a cheap alternative to a handgun when it comes to the home.

Uh huh, sure...
All this gun talk is making me want to hit up the range. It's been a long time (way too long unfortunately). Nice thing is there is a good indoor range about 15 minutes away from my office, so I can go during a lunch break.

I think one of the differences between the XD and XDm was the stock clip size, maybe it was 14 vs 19? Not a big deal, but it was something. I think the trigger was supposed to be better as well.
