This is going to put a dent in importing

I know a lot of you won't be able to read the bulletin as it is entirely in Japanese, so in a nutshell...

Due to the recent terrorist plot to attack the US using toner cartridges as bombs, the Department of Homeland Defense has decided to up the security on many packages coming in to the United States.

Not only are Yemen-originated packages restricted, but JAPAN has also been restricted.

Per the Japanese Postal Service (JapanPost), starting 11/17, all air freight over 453g (i.e. 1 pound) in weight will be restricted from air freight into the US mainland and its territories.

I didn't read it closely or do further research, but it seems like we might still be able to ship it via ocean. Only air freight services have been suspended.

Still...I find this ridiculous. We've had a long standing relationship with Japan, and they're a staunch ally of the US (we can debate endlessly about the ethics of HOW they became our ally, but I digress.). For the Dept. of Homeland Security to come out and restrict packages from a trusted ally like Japan seems ludicrous to me. I know a lot of people who import stuff from Japan that will easily get screwed over by this new policy.

For more information, here is the statement from the Dept. of Homeland Security

Quote:

This ban will also apply to certain inbound international air cargo shipments as well.
What do other people think? Are we getting ahead of ourselves in a vain attempt to keep ourselves 'safe'? If this keeps up, I think pretty soon we're going to start looking at Britain in a very suspicious way.

tl;dr version - hope nobody is ordering JDM parts via air freight, because you're stuck waiting for the boat to arrive now.

(and don't even get me started about trying to get my pillows :crying:)

i already dont trust britian, something about needing subtitles when they are supposedly speaking the same language sends a red flag

The bad thing is that we are trading everything for the illusion of security. It's all there to make you think we're safe when we're not. And until this is a military state we won't be. And that's a risk I'm willing to take.

All they need is better scanning procedures instead in wasting the money on other stuff. :shakes head:

this isn't about security. America gets all up on china because they keep their currency artificially low in order to promote trade so people import their products. We started to use quantitative easing in order to devalue our currency with the same hope of boosting our exports. Unfortunately, everyone else will follow suite, so in essence, all we've done is devalue our currency and not boosted our exports. These BS security measures are only to impose more difficulty and restrictions in hopes that we will import less, and export more.

^^ This. We keep getting knee jerk reactions because they don't know what the fvck they're doing, but they have to do something.

no worries. japan doesn't make anything anymore. :icon17:

we buy from china.

tbonesteak 11-20-2010 06:48 PM

haha sad but true.

even china has started out sourcing most of their production to even cheaper places. A person could put a bomb on a ship More easily then they could on a plane anyway if that was really the concern. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get there either since however it would be triggered could be adjusted accordingly so that wouldn't be a concern either. It's just another step towards socialism and or military rule:ughdance:

I haven't imported anything recently, although in July I'm supposed to be getting something. Not sure if it's still an issue or not. I'll ask some of my contacts and see.
