To legitimately claim to be of a certain ethnicity you should at the very least be familiar with its customs, culture, history, traditions, and be able to speak the native language. In the case of the Philippines that language is Tagalog. If not it’s about as lame as my self trying to claim I’m Irish and German simply because of my blood line. Who you are has a lot more to do with where and how you were raised NOT what country you were born and or who your parents are, etc. Most of you including my self would be more accurately described as: “American of “insert decent" ".

Very deep answer.

Actually there are several languages spoken there, not just Tagalog. Understanding a culture doesn't make you any less of your ethnicity. I'm proud to be American AND Filipino. No one ever said you only had to pick one. Genetically we all decend from a common ancestor anyway, which renderes all classifications of race meaningless.

Did I say ONLY Tagalog? No, I didn't. Tagalog and English (Yes English) just so happen to be the "official" and most wide spread language of the Philippines. So chances are if you're going to flaunt your "Filipino" heritage you'll at least know the national language, customs, culture, traditions, etc. The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7000 islands so of course there are different dialects’. Yes, one can chose to be “proud” of whatever he /she wants but choosing to represent a nation you know al most nothing is beyond lame. I say if you’re so proud to be “Filipino” learn the national language, culture and actually live there for a few years at the very least. If you feel the same way after that then by all means flaunt your “Filipino Pride”! Otherwise you just look kinda silly.

Why are you so defensive? I wasn't "flaunting" my heritage, just asking a question. Your the one who looks kind of "silly" for assuming anything about my background. I'd like to know how many American really know their history. I guess that doesn't make them American.

Stop saying lame. It's lame.

For one, I’m not being “defensive”, you're the one getting all bent out of shape and assuming I was speaking of "you" personally. When I say "flaunting" your Filipino pride, etc I'm not referring to you personally (I don’t know you) I’m referring to anybody who desires to claim a certain ethnicity without knowledge of their heritage, language, etc. I haven’t nor am I I currently speaking of anyone personally on this forum, if the shoe fits wear it. Getting all defensive just goes to show what I’ve said probably rings true. But as I’ve previous stated, who you are as an individual is influenced mostly by where you’ve spent most of your life. I would venture to say that most of you would be more accurately described as: American of Filipino (Asian) decent, just as many “white” folks like my self would be more accurately described as American of Irish / German (European) decent.

I'm what they would call a "twinkie". Made in the Philippines but raised in the USA for about 90% of my life. My parents always cooked Filipino food and made friends with other Filipino families. Of course I would call them "Tito" and "Tita" even though they weren't really.

It's been decades since I could actually speak tagalog but my parents still talk (and yell) at me in tagalog but I always talk back in English, ha!

I've gone back to the Philppines a few times for vacations - I usually pick up some barrelmen and balisong knives as souvenirs.

I still consider myself Filipino, a twinkie but still Filipino. Filipino-American?
