I think the hardest part for me is not being able to use Bisaya or Tagalog on a daily basis. I can understand what others are saying, but it feels like I'm always translating things into english instead of just thinking and speaking in bisay/tagalog.

You're gonna have a lot of fun there. Just gotta be careful, my cousin said apparently there were a lot of "baklà's" hitting on him when they found out he was American, ha!

Yeah most of my cousins speak great English and most everyone else I know from Cebu know enough to have small conversations in English. But a big part of it for me is just a personal quest to embrace my Filipino heritage. I would love to be able to understand the language and hold meaningful conversation in it. I can't wait to get to Manila and Cebu next year.

Not looking forward to the bugs in Cebu, though. :icon17::icon17:

You'll get use to it....that and the gecko's (butiki) climing on the walls and ceilings.

On a side note, is it weird that usually don't date filipino girls because I'm always afraid we're somehow related?

Oh I embrace the gecko's. They will eat the bugs. :icon17:

I just have a thing where all of them remind me of my mom, so I could never date one. However Masa tells me there are quite a few castiza out there. :icon17:

I'm learning. I'm only half (mom) but I'm making it a point to embrace that side of my heritage. My goal is to be fluent in Tagalog by next March when I go "home" for the first time to visit family I haven't seen in ages (or at all beyond Facebook).

I'm doing the Rosetta Stone courses now, and have my mom and several local Filipino friends (including forum member Masa) that can help me out. Chatting with my cousins on FB also helps.

this is another spot where you could learn speak good tagalog.. :)

IT IS MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPINES BABY!

Too bad we aren't all close by. We could have a Z meet / Filipino meet with pansit and lumpia... and lechon.

A lot of flips in Texas, lol. I have family in the Houston/Sugarland area. I gotta say though, NY/NJ has the better filipino restaurants. One of my favorite is Tito Rad's in Queens, but there are a bunch of others. There's a Max's in NJ as well as Red Ribbon for dessert :)
