I have been thinking of getting a deticated DD as well. I've been racking the miles up on my Z I got 28k on it now. If I bought a deticated DD car it would have to be fun to drive to want to take it instead of the Z.

10k might get you one of the following:
Used Cobalt SS
Used Mazda Speed 3
Used Mustang GT
Used 350z

Depends on what your looking for but for me it has to be fast.

That is where I am at, I enjoy having some power even daily, but also need something practical.

You live in the land of steers. So no snow, go with a Mustang. If you do get snow, get like a 96' F250 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel. Extended Cab Long bed, with dual stacks in the bed and a 4inch lift. That would be the sex.

Mazdaspeed 3 is a great option if you can find a good one under 10.

If not, an older Mazdaspeed Protege is another great option. Mine's an 03 with all the goodies. Would cost about $6K now for an unmolested stock one, and about $3K if you want some better performance out of it. I run about 10-12psi now and it's a little faster than a base 350 on the highway. Still gets over 30 MPG, 4 doors with TONS of cargo room for that sized car and is an absolute BLAST to drive. Not as fast as my 370 (especially off the line) but feels much more connected to the road, great feedback and steering feel. Not too bad looking either (check out my photo album) although starting to show it's aged design when parked next to the Z.

If you're in the DFW area there's also a pretty big group of enthusiast on DFWMazdas.com that can help you out with a lot performance questions.

Since you saved some money on the earlier cbe mod, you should have plenty for the luxury model with the tassels

I always have a "huptie", my DD is a 92 Ford Ranger which is great for the house.

I'd just let the Z rack up the miles. What's the point otherwise? I bought my car to drive, not to sit...

Anyhow, I'd recommend an old compact pickup - versatility is unparalleled.

I've had my Z just over 10 months now and I rolled 17K this morning. Still planning on driving to Nashville this month too! :driving:

I'm almost at 19K and I've had my car 11 months as of today. I'd prefer to have an inexpensive AWD vehicle as my DD and to be able to take it to the mountains in the winter. I'm not really finding any affordable options. :(

For me is not the fact of racking up miles, is the dirtbags in parking lots like Lowe's, Walmart, etc. that can ding or scratch your car.

Plus for me is the hassle of backing up the old lady SUV to get my car out and viceversa.

That is why a have a small pick up. ;)

HKYStormFront 07-01-2010 12:44 PM

yea if you can find an old hardbody nissan or 'yota, the things will run forever. find one for $1-2k and just drive it till the wheels fall off then repeat.

Matt 07-01-2010 01:14 PM

The need to drive around a crappy car while my Z sits in my garage is something I hope I'm never forced to deal with.

I have a toyota echo, peppy little car cheap on gas reliable too.

Jamaica 07-01-2010 11:35 PM

gotta drive it. no reason to have it as a garage queen.

initialgemini 07-02-2010 01:21 AM

When I initially bought the Z, it was going to be more of my fun car, while my DD was 2004 Civic Si. Now my civic sits in the garage while I drive my Z every day, Lol. I definitely understand where you are coming from in that you want a car that will be fun to drive so you'll take it instead of your Z.

I would go with a used SUV that you can find in manual like a 4runner or Jeep. I have bikes and other hobbies that need some good trunk space. If that's not your taste you can go with an e30/36 or subaru impreza rs.

'05-'06 altima...'03-'04 xterra...'07 versa...would all fit your budget. It all depends what you're looking for in the second vehicle???

mick 09-09-2010 07:20 PM

the garage queen:

http://i41.tinypic.com/2uh0pdf.jpg

the daily driver:
2010 new beetle

i got the new beetle without test driving it. surprisingly, it's quite fun to drive (i got a manual trans. one). the stereo sure sounds a whole lot better than the one on my nismo.
