Hows the little dude today???

Hi-Step'n370Z 06-17-2010 08:33 AM

Sorry that your little buddy had to go through this Frost. If it's of any comfort, this whole thing is allot harder on you than it is on him. I used to breed and show AKC Registered Boxer dogs, and I learned just how tough and resilient dogs are. I can say with certainty that your little buddy will amaze you, as he already has, by continuing on, and enjoying life as much as he did before, and act like nothing happened to him. Dogs always see the best side of life. For example; if a dog had a Z, he'd just enjoy the heck out of it, and never wonder if some other car may be better than his Z. ;)

The up-side of this is that you saw the problem and had it fixed right away.

Do you have any idea as to how this happened? A fall down some stairs, a tussle with his Husky buddy?

Mike 06-17-2010 08:42 AM

sorry to see it but glad he is doing ok. Dogs adapt real easily, so like Hi-Step said, its harder on you than him.

frost 06-17-2010 10:54 AM

Thanks again everyone. Today is a little rough, he wants to scratch so bad he's crying that he can't. I was able to take his cone off for most of the day yesterday, because he didn't seem to have any interest in it, which means the cone has to stay on today.

On the upside, he's more mobile and a little less "out of it."

Ta when dogs get put under they are "out of it" for a while - as are humans but we seem to come out of it faster.

Each day will be better and better :excited:

Usually caused by impact. i.e. running into a wall, having a blunt object dropped on their head.

dad 06-17-2010 04:05 PM

Frost, same thing happened to my daughters Chawawa. The vet put the eye back in , but it is off centered. She has to apply eye drops into/on the eye a couple times a day!
TLC, your pets depend, and count on you.
Who else gives you that, happy greeting, glad your home, when you walk in the door!

If you want to know who your TRUE friend is, lock your dog AND your girlfriend in the trunk of your car for three hours.
Open the trunk and see which one is happy to see you.....

Yeah, can't remember if I mentioned this (and don't wanna go back and read through, but the dr said he had seen a case where a dog ran into a wall and knocked one out, one where someone squeezed her dog and the eye popped out, one where a dog sneezed ...

I asked if we could put the eye back in, but she started talking about infections, head pressure, all this other stuff, really pushed me off of it.
Then I asked about a fake eye, she said she could do it, but there were a lot of risks of infections with that as well.

I called off another day to give it more thought

Horseface 06-17-2010 08:44 PM

Ouch. This sucks, but I'm sure it'll be fine. My friend's dog lost its eye and is still mad as arseholes. Took it about 2 weeks to get over it. However, his depth perception isn't quite so good anymore, so he's not allowed to drive.

That's fine, I never let him drive the Z anyway ... not after he got wasted and crashed the Jag.

frost 06-18-2010 04:24 PM

I've been growing in concern that he's not even 3 years old and popped out his eye on a whim, that he may lose his other eye in the next ~10 years. Maybe I should make him wear doggles.

I understand your concern Frost, but don't let it eat you up. There's nothing worse than spending the rest of your dogs life worrying about what's going to happen to him. This could have been a congenital problem, one socket bigger than the other, and the other eye is, and will be, just fine.

I'd be more concerned as to what caused the eye to pop out.

If you can find that out, you can do something about not have it happen again.

Do you leave the dogs free, or crate them, when their home alone? Dogs need to run, and if they're home alone, especially if there's two or more, they WILL find ways to burn off that excess energy, believe me! they run around, play rough -etc.

And if they're alone, and free, they can get hurt, and no one will know what happened.

Watch your dogs play, is the bigger one rough with the little guy? If so, it's not that he's a bad dog, he doesn't know the difference in size, he's just being a dog.

When they play, do they run around the house at high speed? if so, he may have not been able to negotiate a turn quick turn and plowed into a wall or something.

Do you have a stairway that he may have fallen down?

If they were playing on a bed or couch and fell off, and the big guy fell on him, that could do it. Or a fall alone could do it on it's own.

And like someone else on the Forum said, maybe he just sneezed and popped it out.

Do you know who his breeder was? If so, contact them and discuss the situation with them, tell them your concern. No one knows more about the "flukes" of a specific breed than a breeder does.

If you don't know your dogs breeder, then find one or two breeders and ask to discuss this with them. Most breeders are glad to help answer these kind of questions.

Also, there is a national breed club for every breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. Get on the net and google your breeds national club, then research from there. Don't hesitate to contact breeders you find there, they'll be glad to help you with your concern.

Also google your breed, and the eye popping problem. You'll find all sorts of info, blogs and etc there.

Unfortunately, your Vet may be the worst place to discuss this, unless he has the same dog, they don't know nearly as much as a breeder does. Breeders have lived with these dogs for years, and after a while, they know all there is to know about that breed.

But, don't let this eat you up. Most likely, it will never happen again..

.

Sound advice mate. I will spend some time talking to some breeders and getting their insights.

I do have a larger dog. While they do play, the larger one is most gentle, and will generally just lay there and let the little one pounce on her. While I'm away, they are kept in a laundry room (which is kept empty, other than the washer/dryer) with a doggy door to an outdoor gated grass area. There is nothing they have access to that could have done this, it had to be some sort of impact, or that wild sneeze.

Cheers :tiphat:

Isn't it amazing how resilient these dogs are?! Your little buddy looks as happy as if nothing happened. Dogs live in the moment, and he sure demonstrating that. He's just happy to be alive and with his family.

He looks real good, looks like the worst is over. Glad to see that.
