Unlimited data no more on the iPhone

AT&T makes sweeping changes to data plans, iPhone tethering coming at OS 4 launch -- Engadget

Quote:

The existing $30 fair-use "unlimited" smartphone data plan is being replaced by two new options: $15 per month for 200MB and $25 for 2GB (called "DataPlus" and "DataPro," respectively).
The current iPhone users that have unlimited data plans will contiune to have unlimited data, only if they do not want tethering.

Anatoray 06-02-2010 10:41 AM

I'm not sure what to say. 2GB a month on a phone is probably hard to pull off for most people, so I guess its a good move. But it sounds bad on paper since we're losing unlimited :x

phelan 06-02-2010 10:41 AM

well...i have a nokia smartphone, i guess i get $5 off my monthly now.

bigaudiofanat 06-02-2010 10:42 AM

Ouch, so let me see they get the iphone for 6 more months and they up the early cancelation fee to 280. They are trying to milk their customers for all their worth until they dont have the full rights to the iphone. Lame att lame you know your going down after verizon gets the iphone and your trying to save yourself with your customers walles lame.

tjlazer 06-02-2010 10:47 AM

I guess they are trying to avoid everyone creating their own "hot spots" LOL. I can see it now, the whole AT&T network down once tethering is an option for the masses. LOL

Jeffblue 06-02-2010 10:48 AM

i have unlimited data on my iphone. and i don't plan on changing it. So i can keep this even with this new funny business

Anatoray 06-02-2010 11:39 AM

I, unfortunately, will lose my unlimited, because I will be changing phones. I was going to upgrade to the new iPhone, but if this is how ATT wants to do business, I may wait for a good Android phone on the Verizon network, since its the only network that has really good reception every city I spend significant time in.

Edit: I hope this isn't goign to spread to laptop 3G plans. Those are already 50 dollars for unlimited... Although Verizon never offered unlimited for them anyways; something like 5GB.

Me too. But it does suck for new customers and those who want to upgrade.

I read a little while ago that iPhone users were responsible for eating up mucho bandwidth in the U.S. Like, significantly more than most home PC users. This may be a delayed reaction to that.

Or it could just be AT&T looking to rape my wallet even further.

WHAT? The whole point of changing to this plan is to get the tethering... if I did that - Every time I watch two movies online - my monthly quota would be up... how lame is that?

theDreamer 06-02-2010 12:22 PM

AT&T users can keep $30 unlimited data when upgrading phones... unless they want tethering -- Engadget

Translation: yes, you'll be able to get a new iPhone without switching to the $25 / 2GB DataPro plan if you so choose.

phelan 06-02-2010 12:25 PM

perfectly honest, if verizon would let me use SIM cards on their network i'd be back with them by now. at&t annoys me, but stupid cdma...

Just wait till LTE and everyone will be happy, well minus the fact Verizon also said tiered data plans will be the way they handle LTE. :(

Anatoray 06-02-2010 12:34 PM

Well, good to hear that you can indeed upgrade and keep unlimited. As for tethering... there have been ways to do that for a couple years anyways.

It's about time these bandwidth hogs were reined in.

ummm what is tethering?

Plugging your phone into a laptop and using the phones data (3G/2G) connection to get online with your laptop.
It is designed when there is no wifi around, but you have a phone with a data connection. Some networks allow it for free with certain phones, others lock it down and charge ridiculous rates.

It's something you can do on your Droid with your Verizon data plan w/o incurring extra charges. :D

bigaudiofanat 06-02-2010 02:34 PM

Nice I did not know that. "The droid can do it for free"

Afterburner 06-02-2010 05:11 PM

I was wirelessly tethering my old G1 on t-mobile over a year ago, but I had to do a minor hack to get it to work. It is extremely useful, especially at airports, libraries etc. where they charge you for internet use. Thank God Verizon doesn't charge any extra for it. And as for the 2Gb limit, that is pretty easy to go over. I had a 1Gb limit while living in the UK last year and went over almost every month, mostly from background data going through.

Mike 06-03-2010 09:22 AM

I do a lot of streaming of Sirius and of a local radio station on my iphone, especially while travelling. Is the 2GB going to be a concern for me?

:google:

Tethering" is the use of your cell phone -- or other Internet-enabled mobile device -- as a modem for another device, usually a notebook or PDA. The connection is made either with a cable (USB or serial) or wirelessly through bluetooth (or, in the good old days, via infrared or IrDA).

BTW, AT&T is digging thier own grave with the iPhone!

agree. although 2.1 update for my MotoDroid was a big chunk of fail, hoping 2.2 fixes that, i still like it and verizon's plans (for now) better than at&t and anything steve jobs puts out

bigaudiofanat 06-03-2010 10:37 PM

I agree, they are digging their own grave.

Pushing_Tin 06-03-2010 11:24 PM

Get used to it! From what I understand it won't be long before most of the other companies do something similar. With society moving away from fixed home PC use, and towards mobile smartphone/PDA use in the cloud, we will all continue to use more and more bandwidth.

Personally I am glad they are doing this. I use the sh*t out of my 3GS and I have never gotten over 1gb in a month. Most months I am around 600mb. My wife never uses more than 30mb because she always uses her phone at home on wi-fi. So this new deal from AT&T will actually save us about $200 a year. Who here consistently uses 2gb+ per month?! I mean that is a lot of prOn!!

Everybody bitches that AT&T's networks are plugged up with iPhone users, so they take steps to reign in the most egregious offenders (about 2% of users) and everybody has a meltdown. When Verizon does the same thing in a month or two what are you guys going to do then? Move to T-Mobile?! Bottom line, if you want to dine at the all you can eat buffet, be prepared to pay for it! I don't want to subsidize the douchebag living in his momma's basement downloading 10gb a month.

Anatoray 06-03-2010 11:37 PM

I don't trust the Droid due to too many past problems with Motorola's past hardware. I'll wait to see if they last past a year without mass physical breaks.

Get one of the HTC models then. They're great and I've had no problems with my past models, that's why I got the new Incredible on Verizon. Plus, HTC puts its own proprietary interface on there which is a nice improvement over the standard Android 2.1. It's true though, Motorola does have some issues. I didn't like the way the Droid's slider worked and the general feel of the phone.

Android = Droid. Same thing, yes? Doesn't the Droid use the Android OS? Or have I had too many margaritas already :ugh2:

PapoZalsa 06-08-2010 08:49 PM

I had Verizon, but they had TERRIBLE Customer Service in this area and thier plans are expensive like hell.

I will stick with AT&T and wait until the iPhone 4 fever to come down to get mine before I have to renew my contract. They will honor the grandfather clause for current customers.

I'm please with the one I got, unlimited texting, rollover minutes, and for Internet mine for 3 phones and I still pay less than just regular the regular calling plan and limited texting for myself with Verizon.

bullitt5897 06-09-2010 12:42 AM

shoot my phone bill is like $99-$120/month with att and I use WELL OVER 2GB/Month!!! lol I stream a lot of stuff over my iphone. my trip to europe netted me a nice $400 bill. This is my phone for work and home and is my lifeline to the world hahaha most of my posts here come from my iphone...

So do you plan on upgrading?

bullitt5897 06-09-2010 02:09 AM

Ohhh yeah I am upgrading to the new iphone 4. One of my employees already asked to buy my 3Gs when I get my new one.

vipor 06-09-2010 08:35 AM

I average 200-300MB of data usage a month on my iPhone. My internet usage has actually gone down as of late.

Between you and Tony, we see 98% of the worldwide bandwidth of pr0nz... :bowrofl:

xiven 06-09-2010 01:32 PM

I'll be upgrading as well to the iPhone 4. Guess I'll have to try out video chat w/ Mike.

nice Xiven haha I am gonna go opening day and I will text you when I got mine then you can video conference me hahaha this is gonna be a blast. I cant wait till they do the firmware update for multiple Video Conferencing platforms such as the ipad, VC phones and computers!!!

Anatoray 06-10-2010 11:51 AM

I think this is a mixed bag now. I browsed through all of the options on AT&T's site, which is a massive clusterfuck of a website design, btw, and compared it to my bill and what I might do if I upgrade.

What I originally signed up for: Unlimited Data with 200 texts for $20. They still have it, but it appears to not be "available" for the iPhone. I remember I grandfathered this "plan" when the price for data on the iPhone went from 20 to 30 dollars.

What I have now: Unlimited Data with Texts for 30 dollars. This plan is ALSO still available, but like the orignal iPhone data plan from 3 years ago, is no longer supported. That's right, you can still get unlimited data for a blackberry it seems. I was automatically "upgraded" to this BS of a plan about a year ago, and no matter how much fighting I did, I could not keep my grandfathered 20 dollar plan. additionally, whatever idiot made this change didn't activate my unlimited texts, so my first bill was attrocious, since I decided to take advantage and actually text people, but i got that refunded. This is the plan that people will be able to grandfather in

What they offer now: 2GB for 25 dollars and unlimited texts for 20 dollars. I think this is something that ATT has been trying to avoid talking about, and something a lot of tech sites have neglected to mention. The iPhone data plans no longer include texts. So while the data usage might be "okay" for 90% of the users, everyone that texts is taking it up the ***. Now I know for a fact I won't be switching, because even if I go with the cheap 15 dollar data plan, I'll be paying 5 dollars more for my texts...

Edit: This forum censors ***, but not clusterfuck >.>

I think I'm just going to preorder mine instead of waiting in line. So you'll have yours before I get mine.
