It is designed when there is no wifi around, but you have a phone with a data connection. Some networks allow it for free with certain phones, others lock it down and charge ridiculous rates.

Tethering" is the use of your cell phone -- or other Internet-enabled mobile device -- as a modem for another device, usually a notebook or PDA. The connection is made either with a cable (USB or serial) or wirelessly through bluetooth (or, in the good old days, via infrared or IrDA).

agree. although 2.1 update for my MotoDroid was a big chunk of fail, hoping 2.2 fixes that, i still like it and verizon's plans (for now) better than at&t and anything steve jobs puts out
