A little bit of both in terms of Navy. At any given time you'll be Sea Duty or Shore Duty for a number of years depending on how long you've been in. If you're Sea Duty you'll be stationed somewhere but depending on your deployment schedule you could be out 8+ months out of the year. Last year I left on deployment in March came back in Nov. The year before that I left in Jan. and came back in July. If you're shore duty you'll be stationed somewhere but just work from shore...no chance to get deployed unless you volunteer.
