Getting my lower wisdom teeth removed tomorrow!

:( yup, I'm getting my bottom wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. I have chose to go under the anesthesia. This is my first time going under anesthesia :ugh: I'm a bit nervous. Trying to read up on articles on what to do, what to expect etc Wisdom tooth extraction

I looked at my panorax, it's def impacted (top image) like the picture
http://georgiahealthinfo.gov/cms/fil...isdomteeth.jpg
My regular dentist told me that he can't do it. I have to go to Dental Surgeon, which make me even more nervous :eekdance:.

Any tips from anyone? Thanks

phelan 05-17-2010 02:21 PM

Don't worry too much about it, I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed at once. Like you, my lower wisdom teeth were impacted, but mine were so bad it was actually eating away the enamel on the teeth next to it.

I went under anesthesia too, so obviously I didn't feel a thing. When I woke up though, I had gauze in my mouth to try and suppress the bleeding. You'll have to deal with it too, though not as bad as me since I had all four out. Just try to suppress your gag reflex.

You'll feel like crap for the rest of the day and maybe a bit on Wednesday, but you should be fine. Don't even think about eating anything that requires chewing, go find yourself some tomato soup or anything soft, you'll need it.

Oh yeah, post op care is everything. I was actually told to use a syringe and spray a bit of warm salt water into the sockets to keep them clean. As long as you're diligent in keeping it clean, you'll have no problems with the recovery.

Jeffblue 05-17-2010 02:22 PM

ouch. i didn't go under anesthesia, i just had laughing gas and novicaine (local anesthetic) it wasn't bad at all. DONT DRINK THROUGH A STRAW AFTER. research dry socket (not to make you more nervous, just aware) the way you care for it post op can cause your recovery to be super easy or horrible. the anesthesia might be overkill but. i for one laughed when they took out the tooth because of the gas, but i was really nervous going in. oh i had all four at once out btw. If you don't get totally put out, i think you're less likely to feel like total crap for the next day or so. i felt fine after, i actually went home and started playing guitar, although i drooled all over it.

CervanteZ 05-17-2010 02:24 PM

Mine already came out, but it came out straight up so it looks "normal". My dentist refuses to take it out... don't know why.
Just make sure you try to keep it clean, 'cause it can get infected real easy.

ChrisSlicks 05-17-2010 03:29 PM

I wouldn't worry about the going under part, it's the coming out of it that sucks.

Just be really careful what you eat because whatever you eat will be coming back up an hour later.

flashburn 05-17-2010 04:32 PM

Yeah, as others said, don't worry about it too much. I had one removed and wasn't put under, and it sucked bad. It was awful having to hear (and see) them violently chipping at my tooth and pulling with pliers.

A few years later they had to remove the remaining three wisdom teeth, I didn't even give them a chance to ask whether or not I wanted anesthesia. It was so easy, go in, they knock you out in like a second, then you wake up blissfully stoned in what seems like a few seconds later, not feeling a damn thing, and not giving a **** about anything in the world.

I didn't have any eating issues, apparently I immediately demanded to go get a shake from Steak & Shake, and had no problems keeping it down. Not that I really remember any of that happening.:rofl2:

Afterward they gave me such great painkillers that everything was awesome. The only annoyance was having to clean out the back of my mouth all the time to make sure it didn't get infected. But you get to eat lots of ice cream, so that was a good deal.

So anyway AK, don't worry about it, everything will go smoothly and quickly. And you get stoned!

edit: Oh yeah, and I agree with Jeff, no drinking through straws. Your doctor will probably tell you this (in writing probably) along with other things.

StLRedrider 05-17-2010 04:35 PM

g00d luck ak, talk to semtex he as been to the dentist a few times here lately.

go enjoy some food:tup:

Jesse_Hunter 05-17-2010 04:35 PM

I'm not sure that searching the entire procedure complete with picure diagrams would have been my route. I'm not ever going to have wisdom teeth my dentist says, although I've had enough root canals to shake a stick at.

wishihadnav 05-17-2010 04:40 PM

dang not fun..had two pulled out with jus novacaine injections...going under is a wise choice.

flashburn 05-17-2010 04:46 PM

Oh, yeah, stop reading crap! It really isn't a big deal. Yes, going under anesthesia is always a big deal, but it's nothing you can help by worrying about, it's out of your hands. Going to an oral surgeon is for this procedure is typical (probably standard).

XwChriswX 05-17-2010 04:55 PM

Hey AK sorry to hear about it br0, but don't worry its not the end of the world. Apparently the military thinks that having your wisdom teeth is the end of the world, even if they weren't coming in impacted. So they decided to take out all 4 at once for me, and due to my incessant love of pepsi (~), they decided to take out 3 others from my jaw. (7 total for you math in public guru's  )

I don't know if what I was under was considered 'Full Anesthesia' or not, someone else will probably be able to tell. They took me back and started my IV, and gave me the normal dose and had me count back from 10... I got to like 9.2 before I forgot who I was lol. After the initial  factor, I was there, but not there... It was kinda cool. I had my eyes closed and all and it seemed as if there were lights moving around over me and all, then I had this feeling like I was riding a roller coaster which made it alot easier for me to deal with the fact I could still 'feel' what was going on, i.e. I could feel them putting the baffles around my teeth before cracking them...

[INJECT]When they take out teeth, they do it 1 of 2 ways, they either try to remove them whole, or if not (in my case) they crack them into 4 pieces and remove those. If you want, you can ask them to try and keep them whole so you can have them as trinkets for later if you want.[/INJECT]

But the surgery itself was fine, I woke up perhaps 3 hours later and they put the gauze in the sides of my upper and bottom lips. I was still loopy as all hell and on the car ride to the hotel I was staying at I was saying "car..... nother car.... oh look a car... car... etc. etc."

When I got home I took the gauze out and luckily for me, there wasn't any pain. They gave me 2 bottles of medication, 1 bottle of Percocet for pain and 1 bottle of Bextra for swelling.

[INJECT] My surgery was in Feb of 2004, in 2005 they took Bextra off the shelves. As seen here...

Quote:

The manufacturer of Bextra has announced the voluntary withdrawal of the drug from the U.S. market. This withdrawal is due to safety concerns of an increased risk of cardiovascular events (including heart attack and stroke) in patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Bextra is a "COX-2" selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and safety concerns of an increased risk of rare but serious skin reactions in patients taking Bextra

Read more: Bextra Information from Drugs.com
[/INJECT]

But after I got home I tried the salt water solution that they perscribed me to use to flush my mouth out 1 time. NEVER AGAIN. It tasted like pure liquid nastyness. It wasn't needed to prevent death, so I did without. Also, back to the drugs, I only took 1 Bextra the first day to take down the swelling and never needed a pain pill. So  for that.

The biggest fear is getting whats known as 'Dry Socket' Alveolar osteitis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which was described to me as a pain so severe, you'll wish you would just die. But will only set in in the first 5 days. So if after 5 days-1 week your not rolling over in pain, you'll be fine. Again for me, I never had any pain whatsoever. As for eating, the first day or so is rough, you want to move your jaw as little as possible cause of the swelling/tenderness. I stuck with a chicken noodle soup and juice and jello diet for the first 3 days, then I could eat more fufilling stuff like mashed potatoes. After the first week your good to eat whatever, you just really want to make sure little things like corn/rice/peas/etc. don't get in there, and if so, that you can flush them out.

It will feel weird at first having these holes in your mouth, unless they sew the area closed. They didn't for mine so it was interesting for a while, but over time, your gums will fill the space and I think after about 6 months they were closed permanently. Hopefully this will give you a little bit of an idea of what to expect, but for me, it was virtually painless and very smooth...

But I won't just give you the good without the bad to know all sides, another girl from my squadron was getting her's removed at the same time. Well her story wasn't so peachy... When they went in to give her the local anesthetic, they hit the primary nerve that comes down from the jaw and basically provides all feeling from the left side of her face. :ugh2: Well, she lost all feeling from the cheek down on the left side of her face and her lips. So kissing, useless, cheek slapping... useless. J/K But she had to drink from a straw out of the right side because if she did anything out of the left side, it would dribble out. Not fun. She said it took about 6 months before she started to regain feeling, then she went to another base and didn't talk to her much after that so who knows if she regained 100% feeling or not... Hopefully so... :ughdance:

Trips 05-17-2010 05:17 PM

Good Luck, hope you a quick recovery and no ribs or steak for a while. I had two of them removed at one time a few years ago, so i know the feeling.Take it easy.

Same procedure as well, and I agree getting put to sleep is the best way.

frost 05-17-2010 05:35 PM

I've been through it, had the exact same problem as you. Not a big deal at all. I ate something soft that night, like a PBJ sans peanuts, but I think the next night I was eating regular food. Didn't even notice. Nothing to stress over :tiphat:

PS, will get the fronts removed too so you stop chaffing my shaft? :roflpuke2:

Sunsational04 05-17-2010 07:01 PM

AK, I feel your pain! I'm getting the top and bottom on my right side removed on June 5th. Not looking forward to it. I'm in my late 20's now, so they are all the way in and one is impacted pretty bad. My dentist said he can do it, although he will have to cut some bone to do so. :icon14:

I'm also getting a root canal for the tooth in front of it. Well, wish you all the best! Please return the favor in about three weeks, lol!

k20z3 05-17-2010 07:10 PM

Just be calm and you'll wake up just notice if anything else ... is out of order uhumm... anyways, I wasn't even under when they took mine out I was awake for them and just yanked like 3 of mine out.

CBRich 05-17-2010 07:13 PM

Someone did mention it earlier but syringe and salt water. Use It! You could be fine without it but if you don't and have an issue it will seriously suck. Keep those sockets clean man.

I can never watch them do it. It'll be too much to watch or hear. So ice cream is good? if so, I'll pick some up too. I really don't take any medicine. Last time I went to the ER was 2006 and they gave me ZPACK which was the last medicine I have taken. I have a very good immune system. Hopefully, I wouldn't need too much pain killers (or at least I hope I won't feel like crap when I take these powerful pain killers because I'm not even used to Tylenol/Advil :ugh)

flashburn 05-17-2010 07:25 PM

Yeah, I think for the first day I only had that milk shake, chicken broth, and jello. The next few days I stepped it up with soup and icecream! I think I stuck with mostly liquids for 4-5 days.

I also don't normally take any pain medicine (none in my house even), but I had enough discomfort for the first few days, that I made sure to take it as often as it was allowed.

The worst part about it is the holes you are going to have in your mouth. I swear it took like a year for them to fill in. It just felt damn weird, and it was a pain having to clean out all the time.

It's no big deal. You don't even need anesthesia, ask them for a tranquilizer and some ibuprofen horse pills.

JSBZ 05-17-2010 07:49 PM

I just went through this 2 weeks ago. Had my lower impacted wisdoms removed. I went under anesthesia. No problems.
I was OK until 3 days later when I developed dry socket. That was painful. It took about 8-9 days until I stop taking Advil. I took the good stuff for 1 day after the extraction.

Okay so I had my surgery in the morning today (1045 am). It actually took them at least 2 hours+. Oral surgeon asked me that why go through the same process again for the upper teeth. He suggested all 4 wisdom teeth (instead of lower 2 as I have initially planned). I agreed. I loved the "put-to-the sleep" part. I was talking to him and bam! I'm out! Anesthesia FTW!

I came home around 130 pm. I could barely balance myself. It was the weirdest feeling.

Bad things:

A lot of bleeding from the sites. I have thrown away at least 20-30 gauges full of blood (there's still one gauge in my mouth). Even after 5 hours, it's still bleeding from the left side :(. My dad just bought me some more gauges.

I haven't eaten anything since last night. I tried a little bit of ice cream before taking meds but only a little bit. I can't drink anything either because after I drink the bleeding increases. I am going to try out the teabag method in about 15 minutes and see if that works :(.

Quote:

If the bleeding seems to persist, a slightly moistened tea bag can be a very effective substitute for gauze. One of the components of tea (black tea, the regular stuff you would make iced tea from) is tannic acid. Tannic acid can aid in the formation of blood clots and this technique can be very effective. (Same instructions as above, just substitute the tea bag for the gauze.)
Since I don't take meds normally, pain meds are working wonderfully! That's probably the only + news right now. I really want to eat like soup or something healthy(def liquid) as I'm hungry and thirsty. Me losing blood + not able to eat or drink = bad combo :(.

My regular dentist told me that he can't do it. I have to go to Dental Surgeon, which make me even more nervous :eekdance:.

Any tips from anyone? Thanks

I had all 4 removed at once, and they did NOT put me under................... big mistake. You will be fine, and I would never do this without it. Cris covered the biggie, you DO NOT want to develop a "dry socket", the surgeon should cover what to do to avoid that. Just take it easy for a few days until the healing has progressed enough that dry socket is no longer an issue.

Thats understandable since you have holes on your mouth now that need to heal. Keep washing out your mouth to prevent any infections, but you already knew that?

Glad it all turned out well for you!..my brother who isz a doctor once told me that there's always a chance of death when u get anesthetized...I didn't wanna scare u any more so I refraimed from posting that..lol

Wash with ?? I can't even drink water. It's still bleeding :(. My instructions say that first rinse tomorrow with salt and warm water.

Yes, but you have to be gentle with the washing so you don't break out the clots, or dry socket will develop. That's why if it were me, I'd do liquids for the first 2 days, soup and vitamin shakes to avoid any food particles in the hole where the tooth was, then there's nothing to rinse out of the hole.

Yep, that's good, avoid screwing with the clotting. First rinse is warm salt water :ugh2:

True statement but that's probably for bigger cases like Orthopaedic, vascular, heart surgeries where you're under anesthesia for a long time (also those require an Anesthesiologist to intubate you(AKA put an ETT down your throat). The thing that scared the living crap out of me today was possibility of losing sensation in tongue, face, mouth. Thank god that didn't happen.

Thanks for not scaring me though ;).

Ah yeah, I forgot about the bleeding. I was bleeding for the entire first day. I think at first I was swapping out blood soaked gause every 30 minutes or so, but by the end of the day it slowed down quite a bit.

Don't worry, the worst has passed. It'll only get better from this point on. Unless you get a dry socket, but I don't think you have much to worry about if you follow their instructions.

Good move on going ahead and getting all 4 removed at the same time.
