Default almost had a very bad accident

I'm currently out of state on business. I have a rent manual corolla.
On the way back to the hotel I took a sweeping corner at 50kph which was the correct speed. Just before entering the corner I shifted to 3rd... At least I thought I did but it was actually 1st.
I pulled the clutch out hard cause I rev matched to third but I got hit with compression lock up.
I ovwesteered and then sorta understeered (clutch in) and came to finish on the wrong side of the road. Luckily there was no traffic...
Anyway it could have ended bad but was lucky.
Take care you all.

Ps what would have happened if it was rwd?

yea, glad u're safe. at least u admit what happened and not hide facts behind the term "skill" as a few on this board does.

on a side note, i thought u couldn't shift into 1st if u're not going really slow. kinda like a safety feature.

i was thinking the same thing...i wonder what would happen if u were going at a higher speed n put it in first gear (that is if you could).

glad you were safe...

You guys buy this story?

I don't. I doubt you can put into 1st gear going that fast. A Lambo, yes. A corrola, no.

Nice try.

i actually think its more likely on the corolla to do that than a lambo. He shifted into first, and the wheels locked up once they went as fast as they could go in that gear (which isnt fast in a corolla) then he lost control. makes perfect sense. its some cheap car, i doubt it has the same kind of features that our sports cars do in terms of not letting you make mistakes'

Glad you are ok

Why don't you drive a manual car and maybe then you'll actually understand what he is saying.

Thanks for the nice messages guys,

yeah on the wrong day I would have had another car in my face and a poor innocent fella would have been injured too...

Luck plays a huge role in our lives huh?

I shifted into 1st at 90kph once in my old Datsun right after I got it, I'm pretty lucky it didn't blow from over rev. It had a weird gear box layout, dog-leg 1st gear and I wasn't used to it yet - great gearbox though. Was going in a straight line on the freeway fortunately so I all did was suddenly decelerate and quickly clutched in.

not sure how you guys downshift into 1st at such high speeds. most manual cars i drove will resist a lot and do a lot of gear grinding if trying to go into 1st at any high speed

I did it on a gearbox that had 170,000km on it. I think as they wear it gets easier, and of course the gears get sloppier. There's no way I could do it on the Z, it will baulk on 1st at anything other than a crawl - double clutching helps make it happen when you need it.
