The Elgin pocket watch made me think to post this. It's a 1952 Lord Elgin, that my Dad bought in Japan in 1952. He was on leave during the Korean war. He was a Ranger, so you know the kinds of things those guys did. This "leave" in Japan also included a few bath houses/Geishas as well
This watch costs $100 in 1952, a lot of money back then. It's gold filled, not plated. It stopped working years ago and sat in his desk. He asked me if I wanted it and of course I said yes. I took it to a local high end watch repair shop. They said back then Lord Elgin was one of the top watch brands. They repaired the swiss movement, then sent it off to an expert who refaced it to the exact condition as new. I wear it now sparingly, so as not to damage it. It is a very nice antique that keeps perfect time. Dad was of course proud to see his timepiece restored to close to new condition, and enjoyed by his son.
