I'd say 9 out of 10 times, uneven burn is user error. Either from incorrect storage, improper lighting/smoking.

There have even been times where my cigar would be burning unevenly (a little bit is okay but this was sidewinding like a snake) and I would take my cutter to the lit end and basically start over on the cigar (of course after exhaling through the cigar to get rid of any fouled bits before relighting.) Also, uneven burn is more common to the outdoors smoker because of wind.

To be honest, every real cuban that i've enjoyed tended to burn a little unevenly. But I'm of the mind that cubans are overrated and that there are much better non cuban cigars out there.

After all, a sh1tty cuban is still a cuban, but its also still a sh1tty cigar.

Yeahhhhh... I light my cigars with a torch and a bic

And if it starts to burn unevenly, I'll either light the slower burning side, or lick the faster burning side

And I KNOW Cubans aren't rated #1 anymore, but for ME, I prefer the shíttiest Cuban to a Padrón
I just can't do Padrons or 99% of Nicaraguan cigars, I just don't like the flavor

Favorite Cuban (that's not limited) has gotta be Cohiba Maduro 5, any size, and the Montecristo Petit Edmundo
Favorite non Cuban... Arturo Fuentes, almost all of them but not their $6-7 sticks, any and every Opus X, Nub Connecticut Box press, and 2 others which I forgot... Aurea something? And Oliva, not sure specifically which one

There are a lot of factors that can lead to uneven burn. I think think any of these three, or a combination, is the culprit:
  1. Humidity too high - If the humidity in your humidor is too high and you go to smoke the cigar right away this can lead to an uneven burn, even if you light properly and the cigar is well made.
  2. User error (failure to light evenly) - A lot of newbies screw up the light... this can kill the burn for the rest of the cigar.
  3. Poor construction - Sometimes if you feel the wrapper of a cigar you can find soft spots. This is where the tobacco was wrapped poorly resulting in air pockets that will burn faster than the more tightly packed tobacco. This will result in uneven burn. Less common in high end cigars but it's always possible.

My guess is it's 1 or 2, or a combination of both.

As far as your friend saying Cubans always leave him feeling light-headed... the Cubans make light, medium, and heavy cigars just like everyone else.

I'm sure I've posted it before, but my favorites, in no particular order, are:

Padron 26
My Father Le Bijou 1922 (the Special Edition run was amazing)
Ashton VSG (one of my go-tos)
Oliva Serie V (Serie G and O are good too)
La Aroma De Cuba Mi Amor

I always stock Cusano 18s since they are good for new smokers. Smooth and light, with nice flavor.

Offer those newbies some Naga Chilli Vodka to go with the Cusanos

Nice. I started on Padron. Yeah I know, right? lol. My "go-to" cigars are Torano Exodus 1959, Tatuaje Cojonu 2006 and Antano Dark Corojo. mmmmmm... num num num.

OH! I'm getting this as soon as I get into my new place in a week. A Lotus Black Label flat flame lighter. I attached a pic below. Super stoked. Got money now but refuse to buy it until I move. Presents to myself. You know. lol.

First thing I put in my apartment was my stereo. But of course! Here's a couple of pics. Finally have room for a good setup and no roommates to bother me. So awesome.

In case anyone is wondering, the speakers are Phil Jones AAD 2001. Been out of production for at least 10 years now. Short of the B&W Diamond series, I haven't found any that could beat them. The amp is a cheap Bada dc-222. Rewired and re-capped. Sounds a million times better than stock. The DAC is a Cary 32-bit Xciter series. Too much else to list but yeah. I'm dedicated to 2-channel. no tv in this room!!! Lol

My custom, hand-made Kevin Clark double neck acoustic guitar:

And my next slated acquistion, a McPherson Striped Macassar Ebony / Redwood jumbo:

High end (i7, GTX 680) water-cooled gaming PC:
