The Apple tablet
Should be announced today in a bit, and I will update this post when I get more info. Currently from the leaks it might be more than just a large iPod touch and actually a full new device.
The question I have though is will it breath new life into the tablet world which has been lack-luster the past 5 years. For those who want to follow a live feed of the announcement here you go: Live from the Apple 'latest creation' event -- Engadget Gizmodo Liveblog Official name: iPad http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/appl...tabletb115.jpg http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget....378-rm-eng.jpg |

I have grown up with tech around me, so I keep track of everything, and usually end up owning a lot of it.:ugh2: |
The bezel is too big.
That puts me off. Too much dead space. But, let's see what it can do... :) |
No way I can keep up with the live broadcast, but will update the full post when they are done.

For the 2G iPad in a year or so, it'll be:

Only thing I hate about these "announcements" from Apple is they go over some stupid sh*t, and the meat of what people care about is somewhat glazed on. Hardware, connections (wifi/3G), cost, etc.

Haha... sorry can't help myself. :stirthepot: |
Look at that, 20-30 minutes on random sh*t on the device, and 2-4 minutes on the hardware and other specs...WTF?
|
I'm surprised tablets are making a comeback.
The iPad looks interesting... just can't get over that big bezel. It's nice and thin, though. I didn't catch what display technology is used. OLED would make it so thin and light. |
Not excited, really. I thought the screen would somehow be active/passive so it wouldn't need a glaring backlight for reading.
Maybe it will hook up to Logic or FCP like a nice remote control surface. That would be cool. |

I think the term tablet will change soon, it will mean multiple things, not just laptops with no keyboard. |
So far I am extremely bored of this device already and basically everything I thought it might have is missing. Maybe the hacker community will unlock the secrets of this device, but so far I am out on buying it.
Edit: Actually I am not surprised, because I would almost put money on it that version 2 will be what every thought it would have been thus making version 1 buyers upgrade (they may even wait for #3). |
Hehe yea... just look at the evolution of the 1G Touch and iPhone. I can only imagine what sort of software and hardware bugs we'll find. I'd like to see what the 4G iPhone and Touch has to offer in the near future... man, I still don't have much interest. However, I'm growing tired of lack of games or anything decent for WinMo.
[OT] My current phone is an Xperia X1 with custom ROM, and I've only had it for a few months. I like everything about it, but it'll be nice to have capacitive touch, accelerometer, and a better processor. A few people are working on Android, so it's quite fun to mess with this stuff. [/OT] |
I am done with WinMo, I do not want to jump back to the iPhone but with 4.0 firmware this year I might end up having to, and also because Android & AT&T are not playing nice yet (this summer hopefully).
Well one thing I like, you can watch live MLB on the iPad, if they can get NFL, college football and basketball (though I do not for BB) it would definitely sell on that alone. |
It just needs some killer apps written by 3rd party developers. I wish they had sorted out the screen for reading. Reading from a screen just isn't as good as the printed word.
|
I can't wait to buy one.

Well that is about it, you can check out engadget or gizmodo for all the highlights and such. Overall the device is basically a large iPod touch, new features are already on the basic iPod but are just now easier to use. |
seems like a big iTouch that will in time make its way into more and more consumer households. but as of now i think i can enjoy my cell to call/text, my iPod for portable music and my laptop as portable computing. i can see the iPad being immediately useful for those that travel often or dont have a laptop that dont need a traditional OS where you can install your own programs. The iPad is pretty much a multimedia tablet so im not sure how the business enterprise apps may take to this. only time and a price cut will tell

A few things about this. Being a apple users I will say that I enjoy apple's products.
However Corny Name Tad Expensive Expected more out of the interface but than again it could be more than what I am thinking. I doubt it has much REAL use. Yes even me being a apple user and lover I still will say this is probably not one of their best products. |

It's Berk HFC's or the iPad....I think I'll get the iPad...

I will admit I was hoping for some more functionality rather than a giant iTouch. Here is what I was expecting.... YouTube - Microsoft "Courier" secret tablet |

it's so much easier for M$ to copy and expand on Apple rather than worry about having an "original idea" :stirthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot: :stirthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot: |
I'm a sucker for the latest and greatest technology. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I don't even need the iPad I already have a Mac Book Pro and an iPhone, but this thing is NEAT!

No Adobe Flash support
No expansion (can't add additional storage) No camera No USB support I think I'll wait for version 2.0 |
Well it has officially launched and reviews are coming in.
Some new or iPad only apps that seem to be hitting the usage of the iPad correctly: Gizmodo's Essential iPad Apps - Best ipad apps - Gizmodo The review: Apple iPad review -- Engadget I have not bought one yet, nor will I probably the first year. Though my view of how this device is going to work has changed the past month with what seems to be a flood of new apps by unknown developers. You have companies like ABC, NBC, Hulu, Netflix, NYT, USA Today, etc. all writing real applications for this device. Not just you can get bits and pieces of info, but actual full articles, real streaming (Netflix, ABC, etc.). The device might well take on eReaders very well, and being full color versus traditional eReaders is a huge plus. Downside is still the screen choice and the unknown that eye strain may become a huge issue. No Adobe Flash support - Seems the usage of the web browsing is going away with dedicated applications. Will this ultimately work? I think so, but with Google & Microsoft & Adobe all teaming up we might see a huge split in the mobile web browsing. No expansion (can't add additional storage) - This does suck, but having 16-64GB is plenty of space. No camera - I was in the same boat as this when I first saw the device, but not sure it matters 100% now. I would love the ability to for video conferecing (front facing camera), and this is a reason I will be waiting for Gen II. No USB support - This one will probably never happen. :( My hope is that with at least Gen II we might get some form of video out that is simple and easy to use. But Apple is so bent on using 30 pin connections for everything it might just not happen. Not pointing at you directly yubman, just using some of your points as those were issues I had with the device. Though it seems my view on this product is going away from a mobile device to more of a home/travel device. For home it will be great access to news and media (can lose paper media), and for travel it will work perfectly for viewing videos & movies instead of a tiny iPod touch or my Archos 5. |
Oh, how the media is so misleading...
As per CNN: "Anecdotal reports suggested strong initial consumer interest in the device, which went on sale Saturday morning. At Apple's flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, hundreds of shoppers -- many of whom had camped out overnight -- were in line when the doors opened at 9 a.m." First iPad buyers excited, curious - CNN.com Engadget: "We just landed at Apple's 5th avenue flagship, "The Cube," and it's... a little bare. We count less than 15 people in line at this point (still headed by the inimitable Greg Packer), and most of them actually have pre-orders. Despite the minimal line situation, Apple has a huge section of The Cube's plaza cordoned off to make room for more, and the NYPD is here with barriers galore, ready to lay down the law. We're told the lines will be split between pre-orderers and non-pre-orderers at 6:30PM, at which point the scene will look truly pitiful. Presumably the crowd will grow later tonight and swell early next morning, as those pre-orderers with nothing to worry about shuffle in, breakfast in their bellies. Or maybe everyone just went to the beach for the weekend." iPad line watch: the few, the proud? (updating, Woz on deck!) -- Engadget Talk about trying to push an overhyped product - its obvious the fanboi's are out in force, and thats about it. |
Yeah, I think initial sales should be around 75-100k between pre-orders and walkins. Not even close to what the original or later iPhones or Motorola Droid have done opening day.

If you already have an Iphone, or any smart phone for that matter, what's the point in this?

A smartphone is great for getting quick emails, web browsing and time killing. Though a smart phone fails at taking it to the next level, deeper details, more options, etc. Not saying the iPad has achieved this, but I think it can be a proper step towards what I personally want. My list: ~Good magazine, newspaper device (eReader was at the top but extremely limited) ~Better email support, richer environment ~Google Voice - currently with anything apple I will have to use the web interface or jailbreak the device ~Remote desktop functionality ~Video streaming (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) ~Video out ~Not 4:3 ratio screen (16:9 would be better) I have more but you get the idea. I am not looking for a larger iPhone, but a table that is an extension of my desktop & phone. Archos almost had what I wanted at one point but they scrapped it and are starting over with Android, which I think will be better in the end as Google will be supporting the OS and Archos can focus on hardware. |
this is pretty funny

And that has what to do with this thread?
No offense, but there are other threads talking about Windows v. OS X, keep it on topic about the iPad. |
