I'm a sucker for the latest and greatest technology. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I don't even need the iPad I already have a Mac Book Pro and an iPhone, but this thing is NEAT!

No Adobe Flash support
No expansion (can't add additional storage) No camera No USB support I think I'll wait for version 2.0 |
Well it has officially launched and reviews are coming in.
Some new or iPad only apps that seem to be hitting the usage of the iPad correctly: Gizmodo's Essential iPad Apps - Best ipad apps - Gizmodo The review: Apple iPad review -- Engadget I have not bought one yet, nor will I probably the first year. Though my view of how this device is going to work has changed the past month with what seems to be a flood of new apps by unknown developers. You have companies like ABC, NBC, Hulu, Netflix, NYT, USA Today, etc. all writing real applications for this device. Not just you can get bits and pieces of info, but actual full articles, real streaming (Netflix, ABC, etc.). The device might well take on eReaders very well, and being full color versus traditional eReaders is a huge plus. Downside is still the screen choice and the unknown that eye strain may become a huge issue. No Adobe Flash support - Seems the usage of the web browsing is going away with dedicated applications. Will this ultimately work? I think so, but with Google & Microsoft & Adobe all teaming up we might see a huge split in the mobile web browsing. No expansion (can't add additional storage) - This does suck, but having 16-64GB is plenty of space. No camera - I was in the same boat as this when I first saw the device, but not sure it matters 100% now. I would love the ability to for video conferecing (front facing camera), and this is a reason I will be waiting for Gen II. No USB support - This one will probably never happen. :( My hope is that with at least Gen II we might get some form of video out that is simple and easy to use. But Apple is so bent on using 30 pin connections for everything it might just not happen. Not pointing at you directly yubman, just using some of your points as those were issues I had with the device. Though it seems my view on this product is going away from a mobile device to more of a home/travel device. For home it will be great access to news and media (can lose paper media), and for travel it will work perfectly for viewing videos & movies instead of a tiny iPod touch or my Archos 5. |
Oh, how the media is so misleading...
As per CNN: "Anecdotal reports suggested strong initial consumer interest in the device, which went on sale Saturday morning. At Apple's flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, hundreds of shoppers -- many of whom had camped out overnight -- were in line when the doors opened at 9 a.m." First iPad buyers excited, curious - CNN.com Engadget: "We just landed at Apple's 5th avenue flagship, "The Cube," and it's... a little bare. We count less than 15 people in line at this point (still headed by the inimitable Greg Packer), and most of them actually have pre-orders. Despite the minimal line situation, Apple has a huge section of The Cube's plaza cordoned off to make room for more, and the NYPD is here with barriers galore, ready to lay down the law. We're told the lines will be split between pre-orderers and non-pre-orderers at 6:30PM, at which point the scene will look truly pitiful. Presumably the crowd will grow later tonight and swell early next morning, as those pre-orderers with nothing to worry about shuffle in, breakfast in their bellies. Or maybe everyone just went to the beach for the weekend." iPad line watch: the few, the proud? (updating, Woz on deck!) -- Engadget Talk about trying to push an overhyped product - its obvious the fanboi's are out in force, and thats about it. |
Yeah, I think initial sales should be around 75-100k between pre-orders and walkins. Not even close to what the original or later iPhones or Motorola Droid have done opening day.

If you already have an Iphone, or any smart phone for that matter, what's the point in this?

A smartphone is great for getting quick emails, web browsing and time killing. Though a smart phone fails at taking it to the next level, deeper details, more options, etc. Not saying the iPad has achieved this, but I think it can be a proper step towards what I personally want. My list: ~Good magazine, newspaper device (eReader was at the top but extremely limited) ~Better email support, richer environment ~Google Voice - currently with anything apple I will have to use the web interface or jailbreak the device ~Remote desktop functionality ~Video streaming (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) ~Video out ~Not 4:3 ratio screen (16:9 would be better) I have more but you get the idea. I am not looking for a larger iPhone, but a table that is an extension of my desktop & phone. Archos almost had what I wanted at one point but they scrapped it and are starting over with Android, which I think will be better in the end as Google will be supporting the OS and Archos can focus on hardware. |
this is pretty funny
YouTube - "Too Late, Windows 7" - OneRepublic feat. Timbaland - "Apologize" Parody |
And that has what to do with this thread?
No offense, but there are other threads talking about Windows v. OS X, keep it on topic about the iPad. |

It is ok, funny video non the less, but trying to actually keep an Apple topic on topic for once.

Posting from my iPad and I absolutely live it. Blows me away. Honestly just the netflix app alone makes it worth it. ABC has an app (can stream all shows). CBS has an iPad friendly site (can stream all the shows) and converted all their video to HTML 5. ESPN is now iPad friendly. Life is good :). Not to mention a hulu app is in the works.
If you are looking for a laptop replacement, this isn't for you. If you are looking for the ultimate media consumption device....I'd buy one tomorrow if I were you :) This is only my second apple device, so I'm no where near a fanboi. But excuse me while I kick back and stream the Spartacus episode I missed....in HD...on netflix....on my iPad :) |
