What's up fam, today with my Z, I discovered a whining noise that will probably drive me crazy. So far I can tell it's *most likely* something in the drivetrain. It does not occur while revving in neutral, so it's probably not any of the belts. When coasting it also doesn't appear, meaning it's linked to the drivetrain. When in gear and keeping on the gas, I can hear it. I didn't do any diagnostics further, but so far that's it. I don't think it's wheel bearing, as it's high pitched and not rough. I did install LSD not long ago, so it' might be related to it, but I don't know what....the bushings were lubed, all was done good and no problems identified yet. Today I'll do some more diagnostics and post an update....

Backlash on your ring and pinion most likely.

Really? Because I checked backlash and it was almost exactly the same as it was original. I reused the existing shims and it all fit perfectly.
Should this be changed or do I just live with the whining noise? It doesn't bother me that much, I'm just worried if there's something that could break because of it.
The contact patch of the teeth is also excellent, I checked and I had nice full engagement. Also to say - I didn't change final drive ratio, pinion gear wasn't touched at all.

Edit - after reading online more about LSD whine + backlash - I'm quite sure I have exactly this problem. However, the backlash was good. Is it possible that the oil isn't good? I used OS Giken oil that I got with the LSD, and added per spec quantity in the diff housing.

Cloudy, lazy Tuesday, which means listening to Jazz with the morning coffee..

All enjoy the day

If you installed a OS Giken LSD, use the OS Giken 85w250 gear lube with it. Otherwise it will be noisy. I installed a OS Giken LSD, and have a bit of whine in mine too. Backlash is in spec and teeth pattern is good too.
