Now that I'm all grown up and customizing the Ghia, I want a more legit machine (and one with more balls). To quote my neighbor, "I'm at that stage in my life where I'm too old to use cheap tools and drink cheap tequila."
If you're to that point in life. Then you're ready for a 480v machine.

I want a Lincoln or a Miller A/C D/C TIG/stick machine with a water cooled torch.

480 is a spicy meatball. I would love to learn TIG. Maybe now would be the time to invest in one of them multi machines.

Night Folks, if everything goes well tomorrow...I’ll have a climate controlled garage
Efficiency in the beginning may be like
But we’ll see, some insulation will follow

So Rusty... is there any truth to sheet metal being more difficult with a 240V machine or do you think my buddy just doesn't have it set up correctly?

If thinking about a tig/stick machine. Get one that is A/C D/C. Plus a water cooled torch. Most metals on welded on D/C. Aluminum is welded on A/C. The reason for the water cooled torch is that when welding aluminum. The torch gets fvckin' HOT!

It's all set up, and the diameter of the wire. Sheet metal 24 thru 18 ga, use .024". Most people try to use .030". That diameter wire comes with most machines. Which will go from 22 ga to 1/8". .035" from 18ga to 1/2". .045" from 14 ga to over 1/2".
