Treats, treats and more treats as you approach to pet her? Its hard to undo any trauma. When Pepper was little, we were sitting at a park bench and this big dude just suddenly came up to her an tried to pet her while she was sleeping, Pepper woke up TERRIFIED of this stranger and just lost it, and since then shes been leery of strange men. Your right, that first bond means everything and it being a 9/10 hour car ride home was huge ! And then 2 days after we got her I went to Zdayz and was gone for 4 days.
Funny story, my sister in-law who fostered her for a month was in town last week and spent the afternoon with us last week Ellie didn’t seem to want anything to do with her, we expected the opposite, we thought she would be all over her...... but that’s a dog for ya

That's funny!
It was close to a 3 hr drive when we go P. She sat on the gf lap the whole time. And 2 weeks later I was out of town for several days too..lol

She's not a rescue but the same thing happened with my dog. We got her at 12 weeks and my wife promptly left town for 2 weeks. She's been a Daddy's girl ever since and it wasn't even a question in the divorce

True story, when Pepper was about 4 mo old, she started barking at every car whenever we she was riding with us. It was so bad that we even covered the windows with sheets.

One day we were going up to the mountains and there was alot of people going there too. She barked at every car that day for 2 hours straight. I got tired of it and while sitting in traffic, i started barking too. She looked at me with a puzzled look and literally stopped barking at cars from that day on..

Our trainer said that she was barking because she thought it was her job to protect us from scary cars, and when I started barking, she saw that as me taking over that job so she was able to relax. Now she acts perfectly in the car.
