I had to tear out some wall board in one of the bathrooms (the original contractor left out the insulation plus the outer sheathing had pulled loose from the stud in one corner, allowing air intrusion, took me a looonnnggg time to figure out where the cold air was coming from). Asked the gal that usually does my shopping to get me some wall board screws, joint tape, a piece of wall board, etc. She started at Walmart and sent me a pic of the TP aisle - not a single roll in sight. She then went to a national chain hardware store and was able to get most of the small stuff but the store was so crowded, she couldn't find anyone to cut the wall board.

Aside:
She bought spackle instead of joint compound. Bob Vila says one is not supposed to use spackle in place of joint compound unless you have to (something about spackle drying too fast). Is it really that big of a deal? I'm just doing a 3'x5' section (~1m x 1.5m for those who think in metric), not a whole room. She doesn't mind exchanging it but I'd hate to send her back into the melee if I don't have to.
Any other tips for someone who has never done any real wall board work? I've patched a bunch of holes but never used tape or replaced a section.

It will work but it's a lot harder to work with.

Since it's your first time attempting to mud and tape drywall I wouldn't make it any harder than need be.

I would swap it out for a bag of 15 or 30 min and a small tub of blue premixed compound.

The bag stuff needs mixed with water and it kicks off in that amount of time. You only use it to put the tape on. The fast dry time lets you get the blue on in the same day and it sticks the tape to the wall better than the lightweight compound. Then a few thin coats of blue to taper it in.

Less is more when mudding drywall. It's better to do 4-5 thin coats to get what you want than globbing it in and having to sand the chit out of it.

Thanks for the tips.

The weather is decent right now, so I may just wait a few days/weeks and exchange the spackle for real mud. The hole in the wall is ugly but it's not like I'm trying to sell the house right now.

More from my MIT friend:

Hi folks. More about COVID-19.

Now is the time for most of the USA to buckle down and stay home. For the sake of everyone around you. Death rates for the elderly and vulnerable will skyrocket if/when hospitals are overwhelmed (for example, imagine 10% of those over 65 years old dying).

Hospitals in many areas, including Boston and New York, are about a week away from getting completely slammed. When >1/1,000 people in your area have COVID-19, this will send > 1/20,000 people to the ICU (these are very rough ballpark numbers, but give you a sense). Given that people need ICU's for other things, this is about or over what hospitals can handle while giving people good care.

There has clearly been a lot of undiagnosed circulation in the USA. There has been a complete failure of our federal response. Without getting into politics, let's try to save our country with a bottom-up response to limit transmission.

Please:
--Stay away from the ER if you suspect you have COVID-19, unless you are in extreme distress (can't say a full sentence without being out of breath). Talk to your doctor via phone and get tested at a location that minimizes exposure to others.
--Ideally, just stay home. If you have to go out, do not go to parties, concerts, bars, or anywhere where you have more than 10 people in a room, unless you absolutely need to. Don't hang out with friends who are going to crowded areas.
--Maybe pick a few friends to hang out with regularly, and keep it a closed network.
--Order food from restaurants (ones that you trust) to go or for delivery.
--Stay home!! Go for walks in uncrowded areas.
--Take care of yourself.

Something is up with WV. Not one reported case of the virus. Or they all are dead from it. :icon14:

I am hearing we will know more of where we are in 2 months. This may be the end of Zdayz this year. We shall see. It took 4 months for China to peak and start coming back down.

I think we will know more in 3 weeks on how all of this will play out. Look for food prices to go up. Late planting due to the virus and flooded fields. The fields that need planted now are swamp lands.

Most of my dogs diet consists of real meat. I'm so mad. I was lucky to find some chicken legs... and 5 lbs of ground pork... everything else is sold out.

When we went to walmart last night. All the meat cases was empty. Beef, pork, and chicken, gone. This is why I keep a stock pile of stuff at home. Worst case, I'm good for 3 months.

My order from "My Patriot Supply" should be here next Wednesday. I ordered it back on 2/14. They have a huge demand for their stuff right now. Normally, it's 2 days.
