I think they might have broke the record over Libya back in the day (80's). They were outrunning a SAM over Libya during a photo recon. Habu (SR71) hit Mach 3+ with the throttles firewalled. I had the pleasure of seeing that aircraft overhead while on Okinawa and tracking him on scope once. If you don't pick him up on the first sweep, he won't be there on the second.


The Japanese and the Air Force jockeys at Kadena called the SR-71 Habu...because it was black and quick, just like the snake.

I was in the formation when they retired the SR71 at Robins AFB in Warner Robins Ga Museum. During the ceremony an F15 went vertical right over top of us. I heard the turbines whining just before we got the hot jet wash. That was awesome.
