I want to just kinda go out in the bush and collect materials. Can I just free roam like that or does the story always have to progress?

Friday, we'll meet up for dinner, saturday will be Hoover dam then dinner after, Sunday is open and will be a travel day for some.. Its pretty open and flexible, definitely nothing set in stone.

Yea. Expeditions are a thing. Can just go out and free hunt the areas. Click the pad on the PS4 controller and it should open your map. Then press square and it'll open up your map of all areas you can explore.
