How would you feel if your son comes visit you one day and says to you, "Dad. I traded your Jeep for a brand new 370z"

if you really loved him you would have just gave him money for a down payment and made him make payments on something. teach him value.....

Yeah its pretty dumb to just give your kids cars... hey heres a free car!! You think you are doing your kids a favour but really you are not I'm kinda young and have owned two cars so far, i paid for both of them myself by working hard. If my father had just paid for them both, sure i would have been real happy but i wouldn't understand the true value of working hard for your first big purchase, the very thing that gives you independence and freedom... when dad buys that for you it aint the same as when you buy it yourself Plus its green...he wanted black! - Ty |

Awesome move man. My dad is a lot like you...I thank God everyday for being his son and for the opportunities and support he's given me and I'm sure your son is the same. By the way, not every kid out there who is given a new car is spoiled, fk the stats on the spoiled ones but there are still great deserving kids out there, I'm thankful for my gifted life and Z and I'm sure your son will value his Jeep. It looks like a lot of fun to drive I suggest you put the drink down and take it for a spin.

I never attacked you and your son, nor would i, re-read my post again here is my point from my original post "If my father had just paid for them both, sure i would have been real happy but i wouldn't understand the true value of working hard for your first big purchase, the very thing that gives you independence and freedom... when dad buys that for you it aint the same as when you buy it yourself" We all know you love your kid to death, you sold your bike for him, thats hard for a man to do. I know everyone loves their kids to death and wants to give them the world, in the grand scheme of things giving your kid a car OR making them pay for it is not a life and death matter. It would be smarter and much more beneficial for you and your kids if you put the down payment on it and make them pay off the rest, i don't see how hard that is to understand. He can work hard at school, college and still pay for his own car, i am doing exactly that...it ain't hard This way you could have done what you originally came here to do, sell your beautiful bike, buy your 370z and just put the down payment on your sons car, it would be a win/win for everyone. - Ty |

Ur decision to give a kid a car is ur decision but my parents made me get a job to get mine, never gave me any financial support, i've been working since i was 14 to have the things i want, I'm 20 drive a 370z, was honor roll, a blown knee killed football for me, and the only records I have are driving, and employment. I not only understand the value of working for what i want, i understand being poor and the unfairness that is present in our world that is the majority of us won't get handouts. Nobody knows your kid better than you and plenty of rich kids eventually go on to be rich and do well in there lives so don't think we are trying to tell you what to do it's just that it worked for my parents, it'll work for me. On a side note, I have a friend who had SOO much handed to him by his parents and he is never going anywhere in his life and makes terrible decisions because he isn't responsible for anything he does. If I ever did decide to buy my kid a car, i would make him pay at least half, or buy him a broken car and make him fix it(pass on the car gene ). There are valid points both ways on this.
Edit: just to as i like arguments, I'm on my 5th car, slated to by house when i turn 26, and have a stable future where the hell is my Jeep Last edited by 1slow370; 01-19-2010 at 07:42 AM. |

I think everyone has different views on what they feels should have been done. I support what you did as you have many reasons for your decision!! My dad always said be patient and work hard and good things will come.
I dont like they way everyone gets so uptight about parents buying new cars for their kids but if they believe they deserve it and they have the money that they have worked hard for and are prepared to spend it on their child it is there choice. So good on you for doing what you felt was right! its a wonderful car and i hope he has many safe miles in it! (And you never know one day he may end up buying you a new car!!! haha) and Good luck with saving up for your dream car again!!

man if I was the OP I'd lock the post, many people out there didn't have the opportunity that the OP gave his son. Many of us also know about many people who were given the world and squandered it, but they over look the fact that young people such as myself actually make something of the opportunity. OP you did a great thing, hands down and you know it
