Gentlemen, all i have to say is i kinda' miss my wife bitching (she passed away in 2013) about the money i spent on my S14 (hence my username)but she drove an 87 300ZX and didn't mind me spending money on it.We had our limits on what we would spend(cars or otherwise)before we would discuss it.

I know what you mean. I worn your shoes. My first wife passed away in 2011. Married for 30 yrs. We was each other's balancing act to speak of. Remarried 2 years ago to a wonder woman who supports me in everything I do. Says I need hobbies for retirement.

Could care less what my wife thinks, it's my money and I'll do whatever I choose to with it. In fact, she didn't even know I was getting the Nismo. I pulled up in the driveway, moved my SRT8 off one side of the garage and pulled the Z in and asked her to take me back to the dealer to get my SmartCar. All she said was " Wow another 2 seater ", Lol. I'm the responsible one when it comes to money and as long as the house is straight and my sons have everything they want then I'm good. Been married 17 years and my wife does what she pleases with her money, Exotic Vacations with her friends is her thing and I have no right nor do I question her on it. It kills me when guys on here actually post that they have to get an ok from there wives or even worse their GF's to spend their own money on something they want. For crying out loud "GROW A SET" !!!!

My wife is ok with it for the most part. Although I did show up at home with a '15 GMC Thursday she wasn't overly happy about. LOL

A lot of great answers here. My old car used to go for "oil change" quite often and she wouldn't notice the mods at all . When I did a suspension upgrade on the bimmer she noticed it and asked why the car feels so nice now. I told her it's the air pressure . In fact it was a whole M Performance suspension kit .
I even changed the steering wheel and she didn't notice

Yeah separate bank account and parts shipped to work / dealership / Indy shop directly helps.

But the flip side is.. When you're lying, you're putting more pressure on yourself to be financially responsible for the family.

We both earn good money, and put a good chunk in a joint checking and savings, but we keep what's left - and it's ours to spend on whatever we want, whenever we want.

Therefore, it's my money, so I do what I want with it. I do occasionally ask her for advice, which she's pretty reluctant to give - because it's my money, and I should do what I want with it. Her usual answer is "If it will make you happy I think you should."

I'm sure if we just put 100% of our money in a joint account we'd take turns complaining about how pointless the other person's wants were, because I don't see a point in having more than 2 pairs of shoes and she doesn't see a point in having more than one car, but luckily we don't have to do that.

We have a similar system. The most important thing, imo, is to have a system that both people are happy with. Once that is accomplished, a lot of "money issues" vanish and life becomes much simpler and more enjoyable.
