Two jobs means less time for hobbies. Find a way to make hobbies earn.

I tried that with photography ... yea ... I would say that it was marginally successful ... until I actually kept track of expenses. Then I found out that it was actually still a great roaring bonfire that I just kept throwing 20 dollar bills into.

Already do wedding photog and computer maintenance on the side. Nothing crazy though. People are cheap. No I will not do a wedding for $500. Edits alone are worth that much.

jpkirk 07-10-2015 12:57 PM

I used to do weddings. Back in the days of film. I experienced two episodes of equipment failure and I was done.

Now when people ask me I tell them they would be far better off documenting one of the most important days of their life using a professional photographer. Pay them what they want. Good ones will get you exactly what you are looking for.

I've had one photography sale on Etsy lol. $25 or so print of a peacock. :|

I've taken engagement, wedding, and holiday photos for family and I've made $5 doing that. :shakes head:

Most pro's these days do far more than just photography. Teaching, speaking, writing. It is a full day every day.

Yeah and once it starts becoming that, it takes the fun out of it.

I enjoy taking creative shots of things and if someone happens to want a copy, I'm happy to let them pay me something small for it. :p

I gave up on doing anything free for friends and especially family. If they're not willing to pay or learn, they don't get my discount. Tired of doing a days worth of photos and a weeks worth of edits for nothing but a Thanks. Same applies to computers and cars.

I've done 4 weddings. All started at $2,000

Computers are an upfront $50 for diagnostics and $40 per hour to resolve issues. Any software/hardware is bought by the person for me to work with.

Cell Phone fixes are variable

Car maintenance is pendant on if the person wants to learn how to change oil and a tire or not.

eastwest2300 07-10-2015 01:59 PM

Tracie, did you end up buying that HID kit for your Mazda?

I don't do that much editing, maybe a day's worth or so depending on how many photos were taken. You either like my style or you don't lol. My family just always asks me because I have a DSLR and no one else does.

While we are here, anyone want to buy a 20x30 canvas print of Austin, TX? :rofl2:

Leingod 07-10-2015 02:01 PM

I'm the lead photographer for the upcoming World Series of Bocce in my city. That'll be $5,000 with all teams edited. All other shots are stock. If teams want personalized shots, it'll be $150.

But for all that money, they've hired a guy with top quality dslr's and lenses. A DJI Phantom 2 drone with GoPro 4 for aerial shots. Enough backdrops and lighting to blind Mr. madwi, and portable laptop/printer equipment for quick edits on the spot. And I may outsource a secondary photographer to help with the load of it all.

Not yet. Money is pretty tight this month and my only "free" check is going towards a trip to the Texas coast for a day.

Heck no. I only have a stock lens and the nifty fifty prime. Had to sell my speedlite a few months ago. :/

I've been wanting an 85mm prime for when Dominic is born and because there are two weddings in my family next year.

I love my 85mm. Stand 50 feet back and get a face shot. haha. Why not just get a 24-70 or 24-120mm? Great all around walking lens. The 50mm is nice, but you'll start to see why even a 40mm lens is better in terms of bokeh and cropping.

Leingod 07-10-2015 02:08 PM

Bored at work. Currently doing yo-yo tricks in the customer service section. Think I might fly my mini drone around in a few. Try to land it on the CEO's desk asking for a raise.

I know, I know.
These are my top lens wants: 16-35mm f/2.8, 14mm f/2.8, 100mm macro f/2.8.

The 50mm is cheaper though lol. It was a birthday gift from my mom.

Are you going to take advantage of the "push" party fad? You should since the gifts are for you and not the kid lol

I'd look into the 10-20mm also. Sigma and Rokinon make fantastic models. I rented a 14mm before. Wasn't astounded by it considering you're using a lens like that for wide shots. The bokeh was phenominal, but felt out of place considering it's for full detail to begin with. And look into a macro conversion kit. My buddy actually prefers my kit over his macro lenses. Far more adjustable. It's funny hooking one up to a 400mm. This is what I have.

If you don't have an 85mm by the time it's needed. I can ship you out mine for a few weeks. I only really use it for portraits.

I do a lot of landscape shots and star trails more often than anything else, hence the want for a wider angle.
