...But at least we have rental coverage, because the Toyota dealer wants $350 to remove the carpet and "let the car dry out for a few days and fully assess the damage" so we won't even have any idea how bad they think it is until Thursday/Friday.

They called my wife and gave her the impression they were going to just take the carpet out and clean it and give us the car back, she was like so she had me call.

I told the guy it's covered by full coverage insurance and there was water up to at least the top of the seats in the interior, and to please find as much stuff wrong as possible because we don't want the car back.

Wife is set on a new car either way, if insurance won't total it and we have to dump this one off at Carmax we're good.

The reason for the $350 is basically insurance doesn't pay for the diagnosis. So typically what would happen is this...

Dealer starts tearing into car. This is screwd up, that's screwed up, oh look, tech has spent 4 hours looking for damage and found $5000 worth of work that needs to be done, but the car is only worth $4500.

Now insurance pays us for the car, and what does the dealer get? Nothing, because we didn't authorize any repairs. They aren't going to do that.

LOL nope.

Her car floated partway, water up to the headlights, etc. due to our street flooding during a really terrible storm.

Everything in the trunk was wet (with mix of sewer/rain water), the seats were wet, there was a high water mark almost to the top of the door speaker on the passenger side, the remote unlock was not working at the time etc.

Apparently they were able to get the car started though, and they told my wife that was "a good sign."

When I called them back and explained that it was insured and we weren't looking to patch it up and drive it for a couple more years the guy caught on. I guess he wasn't expecting full coverage on a 10-year-old car but I'm glad we had it.

My DD was also in it, though not quite as bad. I have a feeling my car will not be totaled, but who knows, the PCM/control module must have gotten wet because the alarm started going crazy (with all of the doors shut) and the remote FOB would not silence it. We had to disconnect the battery. There were maybe 3 - 4" of standing water in my car interior.

I mean really, even if they clean it up and I get it back, I'm not going to really trust it and probably in 6 months weird **** will start happening with the electrical system or something.

Yeah we might do that.

I was more commenting on the fact that we are paying for what *they* think would cover a small SUV like a Ford Escape and it doesn't even cover a Hayundaia that smells like *** and cigar smoke.

Sump pump took care of the basement - we had water POURING out of the wall where the sewer goes out (about 3' off the basement floor) but the water never got more than 1.5" deep.

Yeah we *know* the wife is getting a new car, in any case, so it's just a matter of getting insurance to total her car or fix it and then it goes bye-bye.

Mine is uncertain at this point. It's worth maybe $17K, so it would take a lot to total it. I have a feeling they'll try to say they'll clean the interior up and it's "good as new" but like I say... What kind of weird **** is going to go wrong in 6 months after all that water got in there badly enough that the remote unlock didn't work and the alarm was going crazy?

Diminished value due to flood repair/insurance claim on the CarFax, potential future issues that are probably related to water damage that didn't get fixed (like say, the wheel bearings fail at 20K miles) and all that kind of crap.

I'm probably screwed.

Has anyone looked at your car yet? If not, just take your hose to the engine bay. Aim for the alternator and the air intake filter and then turn on the car

LOL... The tow truck guy asked if I had started and I said I did not.

Fortunately or unfortunately, it was not running when the flooding occurred, but yeah I could definitely have um... Ensured my repair bill was substantially higher than it might be.
