not necessarily it may mean that the sports cars go back to being sub 2500lbs just to meet emission standards. if the Z was <3k lbs it would easily get 35mpg on the highway

When the new 35mpg Cafe comes into play, thats a whole other story though. Even GM is saying the Vette may go hybrid.

It will take experimation to get more performance and power out of the Hybrid's. "But it will be done"!

Some may say I am a doomsdayer, but the "Green" movement and the overzealous push towards tremendously more efficient vehicles is going to make our sports cars into extinct species much like the gas crisis of the early 1970's was the death knell of the American musclecar. The inevitable rise in gas prices as supply disappears and demand stays at its current level or increases will only exacerbate the demise.

Sure technology may find a way, but you will likely soon pay a premium for performance.

Corvette and Mustang never went away. Charger, Challenger and Camaro have returned! I wouldn't say the muscle cars died. As long as there is the American youth, there will be horse power and speed!

I just read in Autoweek that they are saying the next corvette may be a combination of hybrid/lighter/cylinder deactivation.

Well it costs money to continue to produce a car. They originally planned on 30k units, they dropped that to 10k units. If gas prices go back to $4/gal in the US, and nobody buys cars that get 18-19mpg, and Nissan continues to bleed money like they've done the past 2 years, which cars do you think would get cut first? GT-R and 370Z?

The Titan and Armada are beautiful trucks, but man did they put the screws to Nissan. Very bad timing.

As for 35mpg CAFE, Nissan just announced four electric vehicles. That should keep the corporate CAFE up and hopefully keep the Z in the lineup..........

One can only hope so, Dad. Of course if they can't afford to fill up the tank at $4 or $5 a gallon, they will all be driving a hybrid.:icon14:

The thought of cylinder deactivation does not thrill me!

BanningZ 10-22-2009 05:13 PM

Boo for deadening cylinders. I need em' all.

This sounds like when the 350 came out

Say it ain't so, Nissan.

This sounds like when the 350 came out. We heard the same then:bs:. Now here we go again, only this time it's the 370 that is going to get yanked. Grow up guys. No OEM is going to pull the plug on a new car the first year no matter how bad the car may be. There is just to much money involved. Just look at the Edsel.............. It was 4 model years before Ford cut it off and it lost money from the get go.

BTW, it's always been my understanding that until the C5 the Vette lost money.

Hey, nobody wants to see it.

Nissan was making a profit when the 350Z came out.

Ford cut off the Edsel after 4 years, but Ford was a cash cow then - and Nissan just lost $2 Billion.

We still bow to the King.

mid to late 1950's there was an economic down turn

Remember in the mid to late 1950's there was an economic down turn and yes Ford had some cash. But not near enough to knock GM or Chrysler out of the Market. GM was still kicking the $hit out of Ford and Chrysler back in the day and owned over 50% or the market. Chrysler closed out the DeSoto in 57 and Studebaker left the US at the end of 62. Packard through in the towel in 55 and was bought out by Studebaker (which was a mistake). Poor Nash wobbled back and forth for several more years when it became AMC and was finely sucked up by Chrysler. But enough of a History lesson for now.

Just remember one thing. In the post war days Honda, Toyota, Nissan and the other Japaneses car were all subsidized by the Government for a very long time. If the truth be known they may very well still be.
