best family car to date for me is the honda fit sport 5MT. no joke. thing is cheap (19K cash otd), easy to maintain, loads lots of stuff, narrow that it rarely gets door dinged, fit in all sorts of "compact car only" parking spots, dont care if scratched or dinged or bent out of shape.

and the 5MT is pretty fun to drive on surface roads.

sedans for me is a half-arsed jack of all trades car.
