Any thoughts on ensure/insure?

I was taught that ensure is an action someone takes to "make sure" something happens. Insure is what you do when you purchase insurance for something.

The one that always gets me is affect/effect. I couldn't give you a definition of when each should be used but I always seem to get it right by just speaking the sentence out loud.

Affect is a verb. Effect is a noun that can be used as a verb.

THE NFL effected significant penalties after the outcome game was affected by the ref.
