Deferred gratification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
My generation just doesn't have a good grasp of this concept. |

RIGHT... thats why i rather get a sick car like the z, it shows you got some coin but not shoving it in peoples faces like a 21 year old driving a 997 to his parents country club would...

I don't know why but this thread reminded me of an article I saw. Maybe it's the in reference to the new bimmer and living with the parents.

Haha...I got myself a woman already so I dont have to impress anyone. I wouldn't be ashamed to tell people I live at home anyway since it will be mine and my family's home collectively. I think I will be getting the Z so that I can build up credit like what grahfz said and also so I can actually save money for mods and maintenance...and do other miscellaneous things.

I'm 24 going on 25 next month. I will be making almost twice as much than my parents combined, which will be helpful to my family. They have been counting on me. I come from humble beginnings. I have been sacrificing not having a car and taking public transportation to get to school, asking friends for rides to places recently since one of my parent's cars went out of commission last year.
I don't have any nice clothes, jewelry, not even a bunch of video game systems either. I have been blessed by getting an education and a degree where I can be able to help people. In turn, I will be compensated well for the job that I will do and be able to help my family as well. Like I said, I am not in it to be flashy or pretend like I am rich and spend money just because I have it. A car is the only thing I will really be spending my extra money on. I know what is ahead of me and a driving is one thing besides playing sports that help keep me unstressed. Last edited by the_student; 08-06-2009 at 05:24 PM. |

^ if thats the case - you should get a used Z... w/ < 4k miles on it... thats my humble opinion... If i lived @ home and saved the 900 bucks a month I spend on rent... Man I would be driving a GTR for sure...

Student, I wasn't attacking you with those links but if you take a moment to be honest with yourself, a brand new Z or a new M3 is not the wisest decision. You will be making good money as an RN, so why not get a more practical car and use the extra money to help your parents out. Save up for awhile, then when you have nice down payment get the car that you really want. You might even have enough to pay in full.
I know delayed gratification is tough, especially in this day of instant gratification. I'm going to to go put this up on twitter now. Later. |

Thanks, I understand...I just really want a car since I've been waiting so long. I guess a few more months of driving a beater will make it even worth getting a better car. Something to think about.

but, like the other posters here.. I meant LESS car. Not as in '370z less', like 15-25000$ range. I've made more than both my parents since my first job at 18. It's been 9 years since, and I'm making more than double that. And I've made some bad decisions. If I could do it over again, I'd be driving a GT2 right now. Everybody probably would. What you should do, is get a reasonable payment for now, and put the difference into a mutual fund or something similar. ARTMX is what I'm holding. You need 1000$ to buy in. I bought 11 shares of apple stock two(?) months ago for 1514.92, as of today (and it's been falling the last few days) it's worth 1803. 300$ in 2-3 months on 1500$ isn't bad. I could make a LOT more by daytrading and taking risks, but I'm ok with modest gains with minor risk. When you're solid in your job and income, trade it in on a 370z/m3 and pay off the upsidedown loan. I'd recommend a 36 month on your first car, if you can afford it. You'll be out of upsidedown loan territory reasonably fast. |

That is some good advice you got there. It's hard to hold back when you are just so close to what you want, though. I've been waiting for a long time it seems but I guess that I probably should wait a little longer. I know that I will be able to afford the payments for a car like a 370Z or even an M but I guess having income to back up the car and my other expenses is important as well, which I don't have at the moment. Ahhhhhhh...it's a little frustrating that I might still have to settle for something else that I want again. We'll see what happens.
