You're right about lighting the tires up though. A quick spin is all you need to clean off debris on street tires.

I don't agree. Mustang ran a 12.6 which is fairly typical for a stock/close to stock 5.0. That's not going to "walk" a 12.8. The 7AT is quick, especially with bolt ons, and as shown in the video in a heads up race all it takes is the Mustang sleeping at the lights for the Z to make it to the finish line first.

You could tell though that the Z was getting eaten up on the top end.

LOL
I thought a 5.0 would be faster
And OP doesn't have an LSD or meaty tires but the added weight of touring and only and exhaust

Either way, the OP's got a great time!

Oh, it IS faster! Is just that the 7AT is really quick! If both drivers had the same reaction time we probably wouldn't be talking about this. The Mustang would have won pulling away.

When I had mine I had to warn some of the other guys about the 7at and how quick it is off the line. Basically, if you're stock, you're not going to win a 1/4 race against a 7at if you don't at least match the other driver's reaction time. As shown in this video the cars can be close enough time wise such that there is not enough time to make up the distance. Yeah you'll reel them in but you may not pass them.

In my experience, the 5.0 does definitely walk, but from a dig it can be closer than most expect in a 1/4 race. There is NOT that much difference between a mid 12 second car and a high 12/low13 second car. Remember, we are talking tenths of a second over a measly 1/4 mile. That's not a lot of time or distance!

The big difference comes when we move away from street tires.

The 5.0 was comming around me pretty good at the line. He Couldn't launch it, it had narrow street tires. The power of the Mustang is impressive too bad everyone and their mother drives one.

I never smoked the tires, I drove around the water and gave them a quick spin.

It was catching up at the end

(And I wasn't making the tire smoke comment at you, lol, you didn't do it while Mr. 5.0 was showing off ;-) lol)

Again, GREAT drag race, I didn't think the 370 would win, but it shows the ability of a good driver, the 370Z and probably most important of all, the 7AT!
