Help

I had remote installed today on a MT. The guy told me never to put it in gear when I turn the car off. I picked it up, stopped for gas, went to get in the car and I had my keys in my hand and must have activated the remote start. I had the emergency brake pulled. The car took off, dragging me with it. It went over 3 curbs, bushes and finally came to a stop. They never gave me an instruction manual........is this because they had to disconnect a safety feature on the car? I had it done at the dealer and it was part of a package deal they offered me. The car is messed up and I know it can be fixed. It's just that I know that it has been damaged. Can anyone tell me about these remote starters? I have never had one before. Should I contact an attorney? If they did disconnect a safety feature, no one told me about it. Please help.

Honestly, it's common sense. If the car is in gear and you start it... what happens next?

It's not their fault, they did tell you not to put it in gear from what you posted.

:iagree:

Unfortunately it's a mistake on your part for leaving the car in gear and using the remote start (even if you did it on accident). The liability rests on you.

:roflpuke2::roflpuke2::roflpuke2: are you KIDDING me? You had a remote starter and didnt realize you cant leave it in gear? hahahhahahahahahahaahahahaha Im sorry but this story is HILARIOUS.

But the emergency brake was on. Shouldn't it have popped the clutch? I'm just trying to figure it out. The clutch wasn't depressed so doesn't that mean something was disconnected? I'm just upset and have never, ever, had a remote start on any vehicle. I know it was my fault that I accidentally hit the remote but, they didn't tell me it could be fatal if I did.

I didn't hit the remote on purpose. It isn't funny. Someone could have been killed. Again, why would the car move if the emergency brake was on?

Not trying to be a **** but they did tell you DONT LEAVE IT IN GEAR. It happens and you happened to learn the hard way. Good thing nobody is hurt....but I couldnt help but laugh my bad.

Just cuz the emergency brake is on doesnt mean anything. All it really does is protect the car from rolling under its weight on a slope.

Sorry, about what happened, but you were given a Warning. If the Dealer had common sense they would have had you sign a waiver of liability? Normally this types of kits are exclusively installed on Auto's to prevent such a thing. Your lucky nobody was hurt or killed. :shakes head:

For a remote start to be installed on a manual the installer has to disengage the switch on the clutch that requires the clutch to be pressed to the floor in order to start the engine. That means when you're in gear, regardless of whether you have the emergency brake on or not, the car WILL lunge forwards if you start it.

If the engine was not fully warmed up and the ECU was still in cold start mode, that's going to increase the likelihood of the car actually taking off and driving somewhere since the ECU is going to hold a higher idle (1,000 to 1,500 rpm) which is enough to keep the car moving instead of stalling out.

Not a funny situation indeed. You're right that someone could have been hurt or killed, but the truth of the matter is you simply CAN'T leave a MT car in gear if it's equipped with remote start. I know it was a mistake, but it still boils down to user error.

When you get the car fixed have the remote start system uninstalled. It's not worth the trouble.

This! Besides the fact that someone could have been hurt someone I know has had their car burn down because of a remote starter! They suck!

Guess I am the dummy. I wasn't even 3 miles from the dealer. I must say.......noone ever showed me how to use it.......they just called me on the phone. I'm not trying to make excuses. I am used to putting the car in gear and pulling the emergency brake when I turn the car off. There won't be a next time. I will never take that remote key fob with me anywhere. Why didn't it pop the clutch? Uggghhhh, I don't know, I was in shock.

332 HP versus two little-bitty brake pads. Guess who wins everytime?
