Resonated Test Pipes vs Non Res. Test Pipes
Hello folks,
I currently have the ARK Grip catback, and I'm curious how the two different styles of test pipes with change the sound level and sound quality. I guess unlike a lot of people here I'm trying to make it as loud as possible while still maintaining proper quality. The state I live in doesn't really care about how loud a car is so long as it's a nice car and not a crappy hick truck, so there's that.... Since the ARK Grip already has the Helmholtz style resonators on the mufflers, will using test pipes that also have Helmholtz resonators increase or decrease the sound level? Furthermore, will the quality increase or decrease? Currently in my crosshairs: ARK test pipes (Helmholtz resonators) Motordyne ART pipes (Helmholtz resonators) Berk test pipes (standard straight-pipe) Fast Intentions resonated test pipes Fast Intentions non-resonated test pipes Because of the design, I would imagine that the Motordyne ART pipes would have the lowest chance of CEL because of the extensions... Also a concern of mine as I won't be doing Uprev just yet. I just don't know how they would sound (i've watched many sound clips, but we all know computer speakers don't do justice)... Really like the idea of the non-resonated FI test pipes. Last edited by 4TthAnnyZ; 12-25-2014 at 11:15 AM. |

Sorry man,I have no experience on the subject, but I would have to say that test pipes are the way to go for loudness. All the resonaters do is get rid of the rasp which in turn tones the volume down. I think with resonated test pipes you will get more of a deep tone (which I would go for personally) hope someone with more experience can help you out.
Bump for Ya.

It's hard to really know just by hearing all the clips of exhaust notes. Anybody in your area with a similar setup you could try hearing? Apparently the car has a hiss or bit of a whistle no matter what, when opening it up a bit. Something to do with the vvel.
Go with what your gut sais man. You can always change it out if you don't like it and sell them on here.

The loudness will get to you after a while as mine has with the stock cats. My target is HFC's and possibly removing the resonators for some mufflers to be honest. I want the performance and good sound but really do not want the drone any longer. I will also be installing some hushmat too in the door panels and hatch area.

Well,he did say he wants it loud. Nice thing about the exhaust is you can switch it up when you get tired of a certain setup. Personally I'm hoping what I'm doing to mine will be throaty with minimal drone. My neighbors complained about my last car and all I had was an axel back and headers. Haha!

I think I can tolerate a little drone as I only put on about 3000 miles a year with that car. Also, I dont care about my neighbors so I think im gonna go with the non-resonated test pipes and if they are bad, ill sell them on here.

You need helmholtzs period. The rasp is pure garbage and just embarrassing. It may not be as loud but the sound will be sex vs a crap *** rice burner.

I've had 3 different sets of test pipes on my car, and the ART Pipes are hands down the best one's I've installed. If you care about hiss and all of the other complaints people have about MODIFIED EXHAUSTS, buy them. I don't have any hiss on my system, and that's with the Tomei. The drone is also significantly reduced with those test pipes.
About your CEL comment: if you're messing with emissions system (specifically the cats) you should expect a light - bottom line. You can clear it easily with a phone app and OBD II adapter. However, if it bothers you that much, just wait until you get an UpRev tune. |

Wow. Surprised that setup is not more popular then because the hiss drives everyone nuts!

any cat delete will create the "hiss"
res will be more quiet than non-res. go with fast intentions. best quality, best service, and will not throw a CEL unless you hurt or break the O2 sensor when installing. got about 35k miles on mine with not one issue ever. close thread.
