Why would a short tail exhaust affect the engine torque? If any thing, most axle back exhaust manufacturers make dubious claims of Hp gains?

Due to the loss of back pressure usually some low end torque is lost. As far as correcting it without a tune, not going to happen. If performance is your main concern, there are plenty of other exhausts out there that have proven performance.
FPenvy and carlitos_370z like this.

TQ loss is a real thing when freeing up back pressure. running straight pipes and i feel the difference even in the butt dyno. however i feel there are gains up top.

i can just feel and hear a difference. also so far the 1/4 miles times are almost identical with both set-ups.

i do need to re-tune soon and i'm sure the TQ loss would be gone. just been lazy and it's not bad enough to pay for a re-tune to smooth out 1-3WTQ loss.

Okay, I can understand how a full CBE may result in lower back pressure in the exhaust system, but not an axle back. If anything it would seem trivial as most axle back exhaust Hp gains are dubious. Certainly nothing to justify a tune.

Educate me..

axle back maybe. CBE systems will most certianly gain power and claims arent too off.

but with my set-up oringinally i only had mufflers acting as back pressure. now without mufflers i can feel it. you'd be surprised how much pressure the mufflers on the exhaust hold back.

Yeah someone awhile ago opened up a stock nismo? muffler and it was jam packed full of steel wool. The axel back and cat provide the most restriction to the system overall in that order.

So technically using AAM short tails there will be a marginal torque lost on launch but nothing noticeable? Such as when driving you won't notice a performance lost?

I had the aam short tails for a while and there was an immediate feeling of loss torque when pulling off of red lights and stop signs. I had test pipes and it was loud as **** but slow as hell launching. I have been wondering if buying the entire mid section and tails would help with the amt of loss but I don't really see how it would.

That sounds terrible, so much for the short tails, guess I'll have to go full on with a motordyne shockwave or similar system

The vast majority of the back pressure in stock form is in the muffler, no matter how you slice it. Same way with every other exhaust system. Correcting for it takes a tune in some form or fashion.

It may not be as bad if yiu have short tails only and leave stock cats on the car. I had test pipes.

Oh you have test pipes, maybe that's why b/c my friend only has short tails and he has not experience any lost in torque..

mine didn't show any loss without cats and mufflers.....then when I took the mufflers off you can feel a slight bit of tq loss.

honestly I think it's not as bad as most say it is. mine I feel is that the sound comes on so loud so quick it makes you think you should be going faster based on volume.
