top speed axle back tips.

Has anyone cut the top speed axle back tips or any other part of this exhaust so that the tips don't stick out as far on non Nismo?

Roddy1 04-26-2014 03:03 PM

I'm considering swapping from my AAM short tails to the Top Speed Axle back... The length of the tips are the only thing holding me back.

horty24 04-26-2014 03:52 PM

I have some top speed in sights but same here tips too long.

I ordered mine and installed it last year, and the auction was for the Non-Nismo axle back. When they came in and I installed them, they stuck out almost an inch further than they should (It was listed at .5" from bumper, but was more like 1.5") Top-Speed was very nice, and admitted they mocked up the exhaust on a nismo model, and didn't take into consideration the bumper differences. They ended up refunding me $50. (Not bad to get a decent axle back for $150)

I had a local exhaust shop look at it, and they said most likely they would trim directly behind the exhaust tip to decrease the amount they stick out, and it'd be between $75 - $100 for the labor but, after having it on for almost a year, the amount the tips stick out isn't as noticeable, you don't get any exhaust funk on the bumper and the tips look nice too. Pics below with measurements

How did you get them for only $150? I thought they were like 400 new?

My bad, I had to search through my ebay purchase history, it was $299 after shipping direct from Top Speed, and they refunded me $50 since the tips stuck out an inch further than they advertised...

Attachment 87728

EDIT*** I remember why I thought they were $200... they also sold a version of this axle back where the tips were only a single wall that was $200, not double walled like the version I purchased, which they were sold out of for a couple weeks...***

Roddy1 04-26-2014 11:33 PM

Thanks for posting the pics. If they would offer a non nismo version (ie a version where the tips don't stick out so much) they would sell these like gangbusters!!

horty24 04-27-2014 09:01 AM

I agree Roddy, so I'm just going to go ahead and buy them. I work in a manufacturing facility so I'm going to ask my welder if he can cut 1" right behind the tips. I wonder if it's even possible because is right near a curve and the tips may end up misaligned. If worse comes to worse maybe it let them be and just torch the tips to make them have the burnt look.

Interested to know how it turns out!

Nick M 04-28-2014 06:50 PM

very strange they just wont make these for the non-nismo

they would have the entire market to themselves basically

TedB370z 04-28-2014 07:27 PM

They are a bunch of identical axle backs on ebay, I almost think the same company produces them and then just get stamped with someone elses logo. To be honest it was random last year when I even chose Top Speed and not one of the others, only because Top Speed has sound clips. Here are a couple:

Nissan 370Z 09 13 3 7L Stainless Performace Axle Back Exhaust 4" Tips 2 5" Inlet | eBay

09 2014 Nissan 370Z Cat Axle Back Axleback Catback Exhaust System Z34 nismo New | eBay

coolvans1988 04-28-2014 07:58 PM

stay away from ebay

synolimit 04-28-2014 10:37 PM

I have, just cut them back.

RoadsterST 04-28-2014 10:49 PM

*Edit* I have the complete catback TI look, but my tips stick out as well..

Mine stick out quite a bit as well, about 2". I have gotten used to them but would still like to get them pulled in flush.
I had a shop look at the exhaust and said he would cut the 2 strait single pipes and reweld at the flanges. There is enough hanger material to slide the whole system forward about an inch.

What if we cut the tips off the Top Speed axleback all together and put new ones on, that are not as long.

Why spend more money when you have some good tips already on it?

You might have missed one of the points in this thread. Alot of people want to buy this axleback but it is intended for the NISMO 370Z, so when its installed on the regular 370Z the tips stick out almost 2 inches past the rear bumper.

TedB370z 05-01-2014 11:52 AM

What about using the stock tips? Might have to polish them a bit to get them to match the canisters....

I realize that. But you already bought two tips with the system. Just cut them back to save some green.

Thats the issue, because the tips themselves are long, plus the length of pipe between the tips and canisters isn't much (see pic), it might be easier to buy shorter tips...

Attachment 88005

The tips that come on it are about 6.5" from the weld to end of the tip on top and 5.5" from the weld to the end of the tip on the bottom..

Attachment 88006
Attachment 88007

or like someone else suggested, possibly replacing the section of pipe between the canister and the exhaust flange... it would just have to be a much more extreme angle so the tips still line up with the exhaust cutouts on the bumper...

Maybe something like this...

Stainless Steel Exhaust Tip Double Wall Angle 2 5" Inlet 4" Outlet 5" Long | eBay

I actually had these on my 350z.... (with a 80 series flowmaster)

Flowmaster Exhaust 4" Tip Stainless Rolled Edge Angle Cut 3" Inlet 5 25" Length | eBay

Attachment 88009

Nick M 05-01-2014 02:55 PM

Making that angle to the muffler even more sharp, is only going to further bottleneck exhaust flow?

TedB370z 05-01-2014 02:58 PM

hmmm I wouldn't think so... figure its still the same diameter and a smooth bend, plus its shorter... extreme might have been a strong word lol, just more of an angle

Nick M 05-01-2014 03:12 PM

Angles are the enemy.

O ok I gotcha. What I'd do then is remount the hangers and take like an inch or two out of any pipe that's straight. Maybe a mid pipe section? That way you won't mess with angles or bends.

Thanks for both of your posts here Ted! Has given me a fair bit of insight. I am going to look into those tips you suggested and also look at having the factory tips welded on. Right now Top Speed is out of stock so I have a few weeks to investigate this further.

Even just one inch would do the job. Sticking out just 3/8" would look great.

Roddy1 05-02-2014 01:18 AM

Just removed my AAM short tails and swapped on a G37 muffler until this Top Speed axleback is in stock again so I can order it.

I mention this because the G37 tips stick out about 1.5 inches and it actually looks fine... Even good or better than stock I would say. (Anyone curious about sound... It has a bit more sound but not enough for me so Top Speed is next )

Best of luck Roddy.... I'm actually looking into a Berk CBE right now that I may buy.

Em370z 08-26-2014 02:50 PM

has any one cut the tip of the exhaust or anything like that? or done anything to fix the extended part of the exhaust?

TedB370z 09-17-2014 01:56 PM

Didn't know if anyone was still looking to pick up the top speed axle back... but was browsing ebay and saw Top Speed's Ebay Store has 2 left....

Top Speed Pro 1 Upgrade Axleback Exhaust Systems 370Z Z34 09 14 Bevel Edge Tips | eBay

Da370z 11-22-2014 08:01 AM

i got something similar to top speed it was an off brand axleback, picked it up about 2 years ago off ebay for 180 bucks to this day they still look good no rust welds are good and it sounds good imo. only thing i didnt like at 1st was the tips sticking out, like top speed these axlebacks were made for the g37 as well, but over time you get used to it

buggle87 01-29-2015 03:44 PM

So anyone end up cutting the tips or replacing them ? This is what is holding me back from buying from topspeed

synolimit 01-29-2015 04:03 PM

Not new but moved
