How to break loose the exhaust bolts
I was trying to test out the sound of a muffler delete since I found a shop that will do custom exhausts. My goal, if the sound is good sans muffler, is to have them fabricate some pipe and tips to complete the exhaust after the muffler and stock tips are removed.
My first attempt at removing the muffler was stymied when I couldn't budge the bolts holding the muffler to the rest of the CBE. What do you guys use to loosen these little ba$tards? |
spray WD-40 on them and try again.....
everything is always super duper tight from factory....lol i use a wrench.... not a socket-wrench... i hit the wrench with a hammer..lol... that gets it off or use a garden shovel... LOL |
i had no issues removing mine with a 3/8 in drive ratchet...
try a 1/2 in drive ratchet, itll give you more leverage...leverage is your friend  |
hammer is your friend too

hopefully not for much longer, in fact i here the fridge calling my name...gotta go, bye! |
lol - make a breaker bar out of a metal tube and throw it around the handle of the wrench :)
|
This weekend will be me vs bolts, part deux. Or I'll just take it to the guy who is going to make the tips for me once the muffler is off.
|
i think the best way is a breaker bar... just find a hollow metal bar that the handle can fit in.. and use twist that sucker at the end of the metal bar.. the leverage will easily un due any tight bolt..
worked wonders on my supra exhaust! |
yeah a 1/2 breaker bar or hey one of those impact gun things. Time to buy the air compressor;)
|
i had the same issue and gave up.. i was trying to use a ratchet but for the life of me i couldn't get them to budge

I've got a 6ft section of rigid conduit...fits right over my 1/2 ratchet. Makes taking wheel nuts off super easy. I just have to watch what I'm doing to make sure I don't hit anything with it. I also bent a J-hook on the other end (20 minutes with a hammer and a lot of pent-up anger....), which worked perfectly for yanking the baffles out of my motorcycle exhaust. I put 'em back - lol... |
as posted above, WD40 is good. let it penetrate for 3-4min.
if you're under the car with just ramps or jack stands, best to use an impact gun or a closed wrench and a larger mallet. wear goggles. ive done plenty of exhaust installs and this has been the easiest way to remove fasteners. |

It's pure gold for locks and anything else. WD40 is kind of overrated anyway :) |
