What is this thing? It's rattling...

Hey gang,

So this thing is what is causing my rattling sound when I give it gas. It's the little black thing attached to the pipes of the exhaust.

Forgive me for posting it in this forum but it is most active and I was hoping to get a quick response.

Thanks guys.

Edit: Thanks mods :P

Doesn't look like it does ****. Rip it off for weight savings.

Nissan calls them "dynamic dampers." See section EX of the FSM for more details.

6MT 03-22-2014 09:16 PM

Big-a$$ exhaust vibration if you remove them.

plato 03-22-2014 09:34 PM

So do I need these on or not? If I hold onto one of them with my hand the rattle stops. What gives?

SouthArk370Z 03-22-2014 09:45 PM

Is the rattle coming from the dampers? If so, I'd make sure everything is tight. If the rattle is coming from elsewhere, you need to track it down.

Yeah that's what I said ... it's coming from one of those things.

SouthArk370Z 03-22-2014 11:03 PM

Then make sure the mounting bolts are tight and that the damper is tight on the bracket. If you can't fix it, get a new one. It's probably best not to remove them unless you are racing the car - going by the name, they are probably for NVH (see 6MT's comment above).

zguynate 03-22-2014 11:16 PM

Aftermarket exhausts dont have these. I dont think removing it will make that much of a difference. Take it off. If its unbearable, put it back on.

Verda7junior 03-22-2014 11:37 PM

It's a vibration dampener that reduces Noise,Vibration,Harshness. If it's rattling then it is either loose or defective. Aftermarket exhausts don't have these and are fine without them so tighten or remove it or replace it if it's defective.

plato 03-22-2014 11:47 PM

It seems to be tightly on but something inside of it is rattling. By the way my exhaust system is Stillen... Why are these on if aftermarket exhaust don't have them?

1slow370 03-22-2014 11:58 PM

lmao the dampener that is supposed to make it quieter is the cause of the noise

I know. This thread has literally flabbergasted me.

BeemaaZ 03-23-2014 01:37 AM

If you don't want it, can I have it?

If you have a stillen then how do you still have these on the car? That system includes them still?

Because aftermarket increases "N" VH.
