First Borla Cat-Back Install on a 370Z

10 Attachment(s)

Hello guys,
After all this wait, I finally got my Borla Cat-Back Exhaust!!!

Installation only took 1h and all parts fitted perfectly in place without any trouble.

This is the First Borla Cat-Back Install on a 370Z in Canada. …And just as I did in my 350Z, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this exhaust!!! :excited:

Since there is no good Borla exhaust clip on a 370Z (except some kind of prototype), I will post a clip very soon so that you can hear it from outside and inside.

It is not loud at all and it has a deep sound. For the moment, it is a little softer than on my 350Z but I have to wait at least 500km before the padding inside the muffler settles. It will become a little louder then.

My only wish so far: Larger Tips (Currently same size as oem)

If you are looking into a Borla Exhaust and you have any questions, feel free to ask!

looks good. what size are the resonators? I imagine pretty long, single muffler setups are usually raspy w/o them

LiquidZ 08-25-2009 03:37 PM

Do you have plans for an independent dyno?

Hi,
There are no resonators (if I understand you correctly). The two original resonators where removed and they where replaced by an “H” pipe. Check the CAD images in attachment.

whats your thoughts on the slip joints?

ive read not so nice comments from people before on borla's use of slip joints.

Sorry, no plans for a Dyno. I don't care that much about a few HP (+15 or +18 or whatever…) but I do know that Borla is a very respected company for their products. This exhaust gives me pleasure only with the nice angled tip finish, the great sound and roar… Basically, that's enough for me…

Ahh the slip joints... Well what can I say? Not the most beautiful thing out there but it is simple, light and it does the job!

I’ll bring back my car to the shop in 4 days to lift it again (The shop proposed it to make final adjustments if needed)… I’ll have a closer look and let you know what I think of them once more.

At that point the exhaust sound should have changed a little and I’ll also take this opportunity to post the Sound Clip! :-)

Looks pretty good! Slip joints work in the hands of a very well made exhausts. The problem is that many manufacturers use them to allow themselves to build sloppy fitting exhausts. Then slip fits don't fit correctly and leak.

Handsome looking exhaust! :)

I agree, my magnaflow setup leaked like a siv, had to constantly tighten the clamps.

^borla's official reason is to lower shipping costs. smaller boxes with everything broken down and crammed in = cheaper to ship. makes sense, but on a couple of other car boards ive read people saying they wouldnt buy borla simply because of slip joints, even though borla has an absolutely stellar reputation.

Looks great. how does it sound?? VIDEOOOOO!!!!

Cost / Supplier

What was the Cost and who was your Supplier?

Thanks,

Is there drone while driving with the Borla?

Compared to stock, how deeper and louder is the sounds?

Mr_Z 08-30-2009 10:45 PM

Sound clips!!

As promissed, here are the clips!

I will comment and reply to your questions this week.

The small vibration while reving down that you can hear on the last clip in the garage is due to a mall leak that I need to get fixed.

That sounds great. Thanks for the vids!

I like it. Nice and deep.

Cost was 2000 USD, including taxes and installation. It was ordered and installed by a performance shop in Montreal Canada.

So, after a few days, here are my comments about the system:

1- There is NO DRONE at all. On the highway, or even at any speed, you won't hear the exhaust unless you press hard on the accelerator.

2- The exhaust is not much louder than stock while driving (not accelerating). But if you push your car a little, it definitely is a bit louder and has a deeper sound. (Check out the clips!)

3- Unfortunately, there is a tiny little rasp at high rev. (That wasn’t the case on my 350Z Borla). The rasp goes away when the exhaust is really hot after 5-10 min of driving. You can’t really hear it from inside the car, but you can hear it in my last vid from inside the garage. I wonder if there is some way of completely removing this.

4- I now have some comments about the clips after a second stop at my performance shop. Even if the clip assemblies fitted very well, looks like I still have a little leak that cause a small (not so noticeable) sound while reving down. You can also hear it in my last vid from inside the garage. We didn't manage to remove it completely so I am thinking about welding the whole thing… Any comments about doing or not doing this from your experiences??

 I would really appreciate to hear any suggestions on the two points above (3 and 4) you may have.

Wow I cant wait to get this!

I had Borla on my 06 350Z and loved it! It sounded great with APS TP and Megan Headers.

Love the exhaust.

Any more information on your rear foglight setup? How it was done? parts used etc? I see in the video when you hit the brakes the foglight gets brighter, Does the wiring come for the brighter setting?

Ahhh! I had a feeling I would get questions about this 3rd brake light setup! I believe that this is a little off topic but yes, I redid the whole electrical setup and no, the car does not come wired for this. You need to tap into the tail lights, install a flashing module and manage to install a socket that supports a dual wire bulb. If I have time, I’ll post a DYI.

awesome.. ive always been up and down with borla.. but it sounds great on the 370

LiquidZ 08-31-2009 05:27 PM

This exhaust definitely sounds good. Thanks for the videos

Sorry to bring this topic back, but I wanted to mention to you that you do not have a leak. I went thru a similar experience as you and that noise you hear on decel/while revs are dropping is called rasp. Similar to the rasp you hear up top...The only way I know on how to reduce/eliminate it is if you place resonators before the H/X configuration. Thats the point where that resonance hits its peak and it seems to be THEIR that the resonators make the biggest difference.

That and I heard true-dual setups dont get that annoying sound (but I dont think they make as much power either)

So dont bother to weld (or not) because thats the same exact thing I did with my Stillen exhaust and I still had that metallic vibration/rasp sound. Look at the invidia exhaust and the placement of their resonators, thats the spot where it made the loudest sound on my car.

Trust me - I went thru alot...I stayed in the car (on a lift) while they inspected underneath as I rev'd it and I stayed their until they were done welding to only hear the same crap. Its the nature of our car and only gets louder with test pipes. I put GTM resonated test pipes + resonators before my x-pipe and it dramatically reduced the rasp...you hear it quickly ping at 2800rpm and go away almost instantly.

Mr_Z 01-29-2010 11:57 AM

Thanks DannyGT for your inputs...

I am not 100% sure that it's some type of rasp because if I recall correctly, we where even able to pin point it to the left side and precisely in what area...we did manage to reduce it by making some adjustment in the junction area as well...

But like you said, I don't think that welding is a good solution. What I plan to do is to lift the car again next spring and remove the clamp. Then wrap a metal tape in the function before putting back the clamp again. If that solves it then I will know that it was a leak. If not, then I will let you know that you where right on!

By now, I am sure that others have Borla on their 370z... Maybe they could tell us if they experience the same thing?

Thanks..

ZPirate 01-29-2010 02:56 PM

I have the Borla dual exhaust on my 370Z (I have one on my 350Z too). I experienced some of that raspy sound on decel right after the exhaust was installed.

Now I don't hear it. I don't know if that is becuase I tune it out or that it's gone away. I'll have to listen closer to see if it's still there. I do love to hear the sound of the exhaust though. Not quite as deep of a tone as the Borla on my 350Z, but it still has a nice tone/sound.

zeebra 01-29-2010 05:47 PM

Im stuck between this and the Berk CBE. HELP! lol Ive seen one clip on youtube of the Borla on a 370 - I think its Borla's test video and it sounds great. Do you guys get compliments on the exhaust?

ZPirate 01-29-2010 09:55 PM

I've had several people compliment the sound. I've also see people turn around to see what just went by as I downshift.
