K&N air filter oil mess
I took out my K&N panel filters to check for leaves in the air boxes and was dismayed to find a pool of red K&N air filter oil in the bottom of each box. I installed the filters about 6 months ago. Anyone seen this before? Oiled too much from the factory?

Too much oil. Interesting if these came from the factory this way. Obviously, breathing in oil is not going to be good for the car (it will gum up the mass air flow sensor). I am always careful to apply the oil and make sure that there is not excess. When I oil my filters, I have never had a pool of oil in the bottom of the airbox.
I would either clean and re-oil the filters myself, or dab some of the excess fromthe filters and reinstall them.

i would clean them and re-do the oil my self. then send a pic to K & N and maybe get a coupon or something like that. But i would def. clean the MAF sensor to make sure they are'nt dirty.

Clean up the air box, clean the inlet tubing, clean the MAF's, clean the filters. Only re-oil the inlet side of the filters. The side towards the engine, don't oil it. Most people make the mistake of trying to get every pleat of the filter coated in oil. What ends up is too much oil, and it drips and gets sucked down the inlet tubing.

checked..the passenger side air box had just a tiny tiny droplet of oil. just wiped it up with a paper towel. drivers side was totally clean. air filters looked pretty damn clean too after a lot of driving over 2 months

Thanks for the feedback guys. I cleaned everything and reassembled. Although it appeared that the oil had only sprayed about 1/3rd of the way up the wall of the air boxes on the engine side (hadn't reached the tubes with the MAF sensors), I cleaned the sensors just in case. Everything looks good in my OBD II software.
I think I'll make a complaint to K&N anyway. Will let you know what they say. |

Wow not good! I would recommend forwarding that info on to K&N. Good to hear no check engine lights popped up. Do as others have stated and clean the whole air box assembly.
