From HFC to test pipes

Since next dyno will be adding additional parts along with going from HFC to test pipes does anyone know on average the hp/tq gain from hfc to test pipes? I assume fairly small?

Thanks

I think you loose a little tq but gain in hp. That was the decision on my build.

Do we know this for sure? This literally is the Q & A I'm looking for.

Trying to decide between Resonated TPs or Resonated HFCs

roy'sz 09-23-2013 11:13 AM

ARK test pipes up to 10hp and 9tq, up to 9hp and 12tq on resonated hfc's.

hmm....That's interesting. I'm curious what differences it would make with say a Gen3 intake, giving it more breathing mods.

TPs, being more wide open, I would think it would gain more HP then just 1 doing TPs over HFCs?

Any other thoughts/dynos/results around this? My setup will be fully Fast Intentions, which my build date is coming up soon.

roy'sz 09-23-2013 11:55 AM

I would say my gain is about 30hp after hfc's, catback, gen 3's and m370 manifold. I have similar exhaust as what you are getting

You get more hp with test pipes but more tq with hfc's because of the slight restriction in flow.

Leuz 09-23-2013 12:03 PM

Around +25whp with my setup. See signature.

1cleanZ 09-23-2013 12:15 PM

Dang it, you guys definitely aren't making the decision any easier....

Even looking at the dyno charts, I might stick w/ my order of RHFCs and just do a non-resonated catback. The only hesitation on my decision was trying to get as much power as I possibly can NA. I almost feel like the TQ #'s would be more usuable power throughout the powerban. Hmmm....

Fast Intentions Resonated HFCS paired with a NONresonated Xpipe
or
Fast Intentions Resonated TPs paired with an 18" resonator in the Xpipe

Tazicon 09-23-2013 12:32 PM

You probably won't notice a differance either way you go...........Why is this such a hard decision? I would be looking at cost effectiveness not a gain of 2hp.......or 3foot pounds of torque. Plus if I had a choice I would take torque over horse power any day. That makes it an easy decision.

These are things I don't understand sometimes. We purchase 30-40k cars, and then try and save $1-200 on a $2k setup and sacrafice hp/tq? :shakes head:

Not looking at the cost, looking 100% at:

#1 Gains (HP/TQ)
#2 Sound

Leuz 09-23-2013 02:19 PM

OP, when I ordered my HCF + CBE setup I started having your same doubts. Should I need to go with ART pipes or stay with HFC. I spent a month looking at videos, posts and specs and decided to stay with HFC for the following reasons:
- it's my DD and I prefer HFC over TP (mostly afraid of the smell)
- I wanted to go with the same manufacturer to couple HFC+CBE (as someone mentioned already)
Hope this helps making up you your mind.

As per FI...resonators make no difference on HP/Power gains...The resonators only have an effect on the cabin noise/sound....the bigger the resonator the quieter it is...keep in mind that the 18" Resonated CBE is still louder than stock...FI offers a more deeper tone...Going with TP's will give u rasp/hissing noise and give the exhaust a higher pitched sound compared to running HFC's.

TP's will give u more HP but seen mostly on the top...ending up with u losing torque in the low to midrange area...I personally think that HFC's are the best way to go....I mean how often are u gonna be running ur Z on the top end? And honestly would u be running it at high rpms for long durations?

Yes, I 100% already know about the products themselves from Fast Intentions, I'm not asking about resonators. I ran RHFCs paired with an 18" resonators in the xpipe on my G37 for over 2 years. I'm very familiar with the products themselves.

I'm strictly asking TP's vs HFCs, benefits vs cons.

And no, test pipes will actually give you a lower, deeper tone, not higher. Yes they may create a bit of rasp, but that's the intent of having resonators in both the TP as well as the Xpipe IF going w/ that setup.

Thanks though. The TQ factor I'm definitely taking into consideration right now. I felt immediate gains on my G37 when installing the RHFCs, even after already having the catback previously over a year.

roy'sz 09-24-2013 07:25 PM

To answer your question for the 3rd time in this thread. More hp with testpipe or more tq with hfc.

Hotrodz 09-24-2013 07:46 PM

I guess I will add my two cents to the conversation as I am in agreement with Roy. I have a similar setup as the OP except I don't have an after market CAI. When considering all the options and not spending money where I didn't need too, I put my money into ART Pipes and M370 Manifold. I chased tq since the hp gains are not really usable unless running at the top end. If you look at others signature lines or treads they may get another 10whp but they will have almost that same number less in tq. Anyway, it really is about what makes you happy...that's why I decide to go FI and I'm sure there will be something else to want after that! LOL

Nope not with the Z34's....maybe so with the G37, but from my personal experience with the VQ, TP's gave a higher pitched sound with rasp...closely similar to running LTH's....HFC's gave a deep tone for me....

But hey....sound is all subjective, especially in the exhaust department with these cars....what might sound high pitched to me might sound deep toned to u...hope u figure out what will sound and work best for you...I mean everyone could give you their take on whether to go HFC's/TP's but in the end its your car that you will be driving...

Hmmm, now I am curious if there was a difference between the G and Z, just with it being a shorter exhaust.

Right now, I'm leaning towards to setup I initially ordered, RHFCs paired with a NONresonated Xpipe. Will be louder then my G37 setup with no 18" resonator in the X, and the Z exhaust is quite a bit shorter making it even louder as well.

can anyone else vouch for this??? I would have thought it woulda been the opposite??

Bolio is correct from what I've experienced

Riptide67 09-29-2013 12:44 AM

I paired up MD ART pipes with my FI exhaust today. There is no rasp and the sound is insanely beautiful. A great combination with no CEL light.

mag_black 09-29-2013 03:04 AM

^^^ The ART's really bring out the beautiful nuances of the FI exhaust -- who am I kidding, it sounds fvcking great!

snowsurfdirtx 09-29-2013 09:49 AM

Lance, I prefer the test pipes, and I don't care about smell.. its not that bad. The only thing that bothers me is the hiss on decel through the lower rpm range. I can hear it even in the car. RHFC's would probably kill most/all of the hiss you can hear inside, though.

Riptide67 09-29-2013 12:08 PM

I couldn't believe how amazing it sounded. I could barely keep off the throttle along with the install of the Stillen G3's.

I was a bit scared going back to test pipes with my prior experience of Invidia's on my 350Z. But, I am glad I got back on the TP wagon with ART pipes. One hell I an amazing bolt on for our cars.

Only time I can really hear the hiss is first and second gear, but I like it oddly. I can't hear it in the car at all unless I have the volume knob to zero.

1cleanZ 09-29-2013 07:35 PM

I've elected to go with Resonated HFCs (had in my G37 and loved them). For the catback I went with a NONresonated Xpipe and SS canisters.

I've looked into MD, but just wouldn't consider it. Ran nothing but Fast Intentions on my G37, and not looking to change now. Only options for me were Resonated TPs or Resonated HFCs. The "pros & cons" of both, the HFCs came out on top. The midrange of TQ from 3500-5500 is higher in the HFCs, with the HP of the TP not surpassing the HFC until nearly 6k in the powerban.

What people don't realize is how much flow HFCs truly have.

Good choice...about people not realizing how much flow HFC's have...you're right....but to them I say...They're not called "High Flow Cats" for nothing....:roflpuke2:

I'm VERY pumped to get the system on and start breaking it in before winter comes. Not looking forward to having to store the car here soon :( Damn midwest I tell ya!

I can't imagine having to store away my Z and not drive it....:gtfo2: That really sucks....Glad that we don't have those issues here on Guam..Get to drive the Z 365 days a year....:happydance: I don't know how you guys all do it back there during the winter time ....But then again I could imagine that it would be hard to :driving: a Z in the winter...

I've owned a G35 5AT, a G37 6MT, and now my Nismo. The G35 was my daily driver right out of college, which I drove for 2 winters. It honestly wasn't that bad, and I didn't even have winter tires.

The main factor around storing my G37 and now my Nismo is avoiding the salt. It absolutely DESTROYS a car along w/ the goodies we install on it.
