K&N drop in and tubes or K&N typhoon

Yes... I know this has been commented on to the Nth degree.

Can i have some feedback from guys who have done either?

Please no Gen3 debates. Ive seen in posts that Gen3 lose some low end low rev hp (sorry if i'm wrong, no gen3 debates lol). As its my DD and i sit in traffic ALL DAY in NYC, i want low end, and throttle response. My high end is already terrific. And i want simple, no bumper removal or taping AC pipes

soooo 400 typhoon? <200 drop in and tubes?

any great comparisons or charts out there?

i know the pro's are more hp and throttle response

but the cons? what are the cons? those are the dealbreakers

A for sure con would be heat soaking since your K&Ns are sitting inside with the engine sucking hot air. Well that's what happens to me ocassionally when I drive during the day here in Tx. But all and all I like man it gives a good Sound tone too IMO. And yes your also correct responsiveness is amazing I'm content with K&Ns and since that's the choice you wanna go with then go ahead try it.

You might as well forget all about intake then and get High Flow cats.

From a "usable power vs cost" standpoint, tubes (or no tubes) and drop ins is a far better choice than any short-ram intake.

The short rams are just heat-sucking intakes. You will have crappier response in traffic with those than you would with the drop ins, pretty much for certain. I'm sure we'll get some rabid supporters of the typhoons in here singing their praises, but meh.

I am a firm believer that the stock air boxes are decently built and with the addition of K&N Drop ins + tubes you will have better breathing and a few extra hp's. I think the "throttle response" that I felt was in my head. But I did reset the ECU recently and the car seemed a HECK of a lot faster.

I have heard the short rams and they do make significantly more noise then the drop ins, but I can't hear my intakes anyways since my short tails drown out the noise. So if you are just looking for an easy weekend, bang for your buck, fun project = drop ins.

If you want to show off the car at meets, and pop the hood, and tell everyone your name brand...then spend the $500 and get a CAI. But the gains are within 5whp between most of the aftermarket intakes. So really its about the brand + look IMO

Man I totally agree with you man after a whole yr after having em I regret buying them and shoulf have done what I did with my previous 350z which is (Drop Ins)

What difference is there between short ram and drop ins?? Whp though

I think K&N Typhoon Claims 14.2hp = Idk 5-6whp?

Drop Ins Claim 10hp or so + tubes which claim 6-10. So I would say the two are about the same..

With a tune you could probably squeeze a few more whps out

You just pay a couple extra hundred bucks more for hot air, more grunt, and a cool looking dual intake

Chuck33079 08-05-2013 09:48 AM

They're probably the same at first. After driving a little, especially in traffic, I'd bet the short rams produce less power than drop ins/maf tubes. Probably less than stock. Underhood temps are pretty brutal on the Z.

thanks all

So any recommendations on the post maf tubes? Z1motorsports? HPS? make a difference?.

falconfixer 08-05-2013 10:17 AM

Z1 all the way

megalapagas 08-05-2013 10:35 AM

Agreed^^

I thought I remember reading that the maf tubes don't actually give any gains. I think I'm gonna be getting drop ins soon anyways, but probably not tubes.

They might not give gains, but they do a better job of smoothing the airflow vs the stock accordian crap ;) Plus the look nicer too

The tubes give less gains than the filters, but the two together are a great bang for your buck combo.
