Mean Sounding Exhaust

UPDATE:
so i ended up removing this off my car since it got too loud for daily driving, i didnt have drone and it was quiet on the highway but accelerating and such was annoying at times, it sounded amazing when you get on it though and if it is anything i have learned from this experience, its that i want an exhaust that is quiet down low(louder than stock but not too loud) and loud in the Mid and Top when i start stepping on it so people know to GTFO

one thing i do miss about this mod though is that everyone around me left me alone, and all the usual cars that would try to street race me(i say try because i would never do such a thing) stopped but now that it is quiet again, im getting the usuals revving at me, MS3s, WRXs, Evos, 350z/G35s, ect.

Idk if this is the right forum to post this in or not, mod please move it if it isnt

here is my car
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=/xy6t-_JibPw

sounds like **** since my phone's mic isnt the best but in person it is super loud(louder than i though the washer mod would have made it)

let me know what you guys think

SS_Firehawk 07-12-2013 12:51 AM

yeah man, get as mic, doesn't help if it's getting distorted.

its a great alternative to an axle back as it only costs $2-3 for 16 washers and you get the sound of an axle back

So you spend how much a car and then spend $2-3 on washers

so you're telling me you would spend $200+ on an axle back than spend another $1k on a full exhaust

you're not going to use the axleback after you get the full exhaust(well maybe but why would you) and you will never be able to get all of the money you spent on it back, so why bother spending it in the first place when you can save the money for the full exhaust, and get the sound you want now

EDIT
if you guys are going to troll, GTFO
dont like my mods, well tough sh!t, its my car, ill do what i want to it

DEpointfive0 07-12-2013 03:15 PM

I don't know why people hate on the washer mod so much...

neither do I, right now I'm saving for a few different mods, one of which is going to be a full exhaust system, I just want a bit more sound now without spending too much money

Um... Alright... I think $300-400 axle backs are bull. $2 on washers, way better than $300. If I had thought about the washer mod, I would've done it before leaving the dealership and I would've left the car like that until I found my exhaust.
So... I think it's 100% acceptable

I do agree, though, $400 axle backs, especially the "short tails" are absurd.

Whoa! Easy, no one said they didn't like your mods, that's the good thing about modding your car...your car and your mods so you do what you want. But people can and will be subjective on a forum, I'm sure you understand this.

the edit wasnt really directed at you specifically but to anyone else who is reading the thread, sorry i should have specified

i do understand the subjectivity though, i really dislike it(i guess because i have an open mind on most things) but i do realise it exists and there is nothing i can really do to change it

again sorry if it seemed like i snapped at you, the edit was again wasn't directed at you specifically

No probs, I'll be honest and say I tried the washer mod, the whole 'blowing exhaust thing' just wasn't for me. I should have explained that in my original post, my failure.

It's well documented that our 370's are just too quiet, but when you change the exhaust you're also buying into a nice bit of bling, and I don't think there's a really bad system out there.

Hey different strokes for different folks. I'm there with ya as far as buying into exhaust systems, but for me, I can't justify getting an axle back like AAM's Short Tails when I am planning on buying a full exhaust.

I feel the washer mod is one of those love it or hate it mods(kind of like drop in filters and post maf tubes vs G3s)

zefaulter 07-12-2013 04:51 PM

I removed my muffler completely and drove it for a short while. It sounds very nice but I didn't like the drone and smell in the car. Otherwise I could have saved the $2-$3 on the washers :D

i would have done a muffler delete but in california, there has to be a muffler connected to the exhaust at all times or else you will get ticketed for it so i did this so i can be stealthy, loud exhaust with a stock muffler

SS_Firehawk 07-12-2013 06:13 PM

idk. I like horsepower to go with my sound. It's your car though, enjoy it how you please.

Leuz 07-13-2013 04:14 AM

OP, I am sorry if you have taken my comment as a troll. Of course everyone can do whatever they want with their car, and everybody knows the Z could and should sound better stock, without having to spend $$$+ for an exhaust product.
Having said that, I was just expressing in a funny way my idea that, always in my humble opinion, the washer mod is a cheap mod that doesn't really do justice to a +$40k car. It's a forum opened to car lovers and I believe you have to deal with both people that compliments you and people that don't. My 2 cents :)

C Haller 07-13-2013 06:55 AM

Although I probably wouldn't do the washer mod myself, I can agree that the AAM short tails are overpriced. Just look at the Nismo version, it is $80 more and the only difference is the tips are 1" bigger. Seriously?

bacalhau1669 07-14-2013 07:44 AM

How much are most shops charging to do custom short tails? Id imagine that its only 150-200. I can't afford a full exhaust right now, but that's probably the route I'd go.

I'm sure it sounds nice with the washer mod. I had my exhaust rust away on my 350z at the flange and it ended up replicating the washer mod essentially. Sounded great. lol

SmallermouseZ 08-22-2013 06:07 PM

im savin for the washer mod. lol

edub370 08-23-2013 08:19 AM

do to a cheap exhaust shop, have them make a short tail system for $100

Zensation 08-23-2013 05:34 PM

So heres my 2 cents...ill preface this saying i agree with a little bit of both sides of the coin here. So to me an exhaust selection due to its personal appeal is a very big decision especially if your taste is rather expensive (like mine). I feel that it shouldnt be taken lightly and tat said i spent several weeks figuring out what i liked. I did like some of the cheaper ezhaust sounds but i wanted something that there would be zero fitment issues what so ever.....in the time i took to decide what i liked i tried the washer mod(because dont knock it until you try it mentality) i imediately reverted bc i happened to pull up next to a civic that sounded exactly the same lol. I however had test pipes on it so it was high pitched and whiny sounding. Thats just my opinion on how it sounds. That being said without tps and if you like the sound go for it....but not as an excuse to escape a nicer exhaust system. These cars are beautiful works of art as well as fairly high performance machines with a steeper price tag than a (fill in the blank) ricer. Use the mod to get more sound during your wait time of getting ur nice system but i wouldnt use it any longer than that.

All that being said i believe some of the hate that people theow around about the mod is from people that feel that since you own the same type of car as them, think you should treat it the same as they treat theirs and since they went the full sustem they think i should to. Indirectly what you do to your car affects the whole community of 370z owners because too many ricers getting ahold of the dame car gives that car a bad rap. I dont think anyone wants to see what already happened to the 350z happen to the 370z so soon.

Anyways thats why i get a little hate spread around about it. And all thats my opinion. You can find great deals on ised exhausts(speaking from experience) try to go that route and make a new friend at the same time if you dont want to spend the extra $ right away.

All thats my 2 cents have a good one and gl with wat eva u decide!

Zensation 08-23-2013 05:46 PM

Sorry for the long windedness :ugh2:

I agree wholeheartedly, the 370z is WAY too quiet from the factory and while id prefer a full CBE, when i had this mod on(i removed it since it was too loud down low and started to drive me crazy plus im enjoying less attention from the cops lol) the reason i did it was to not waste money on some axle backs that i will end up throwing away when i get a full CBE

this mod literally is just a sound mod just like every other axle back mod out there, its just cheap so many people look down on it

ya i have heard that about the washer mod with test pipes, i have stock cats and with the stock cats it sounded like a beefy aftermarket exhaust, i also ended up reverting back to stock for reasons i posted above

too much money, ya it sounds like im being cheap but to spend $100 on axle backs you will end up never using again(and losing money on if you sell them) when you get a full CBE is just a terrible waste of money

ya washer mod seems ricey but it gives you the same result(aka noise) as every axle back exhaust out for the 370z and you can save that $97 and use it towards an aftermarket CBE
