I grew up in upstate NY. Summertimes, most Saturday nights would find us at the dragstrip, damaging our hearing listening to big American V8's ripping up the road.

I love my Z, but at full tilt the engine to me sounds sort of... broken.

Best sounding six I remember was a Pontiac ohc six with all the goodies that was cranking out 11's at the track.

[NOSTALGIA]I love my Z but for sound I guess I'll always compare the sound of any vehicle I own to the first car I drove at age 16 - my brother's 1950 Mercury with a flat head 8 and glass packs. Sweet music.[/NOSTALGIA] Ok, I'm back now.

I always wish my Z would sound more like my Mustangs. The Z sounds decent. Not bad, but not great either. My 4.6L mod motor sounded greaaaaaaaaaat

L28 pure eargasim...[/QUOTE]

With the Turbo, my L28 is pretty muted sound-wise. Straight 6's definitely seem to have a better 'aural' harmony than V's. One of my favorites is a 3-liter Big Healey at 3,500 rpm and above.

Of course, hard to beat a Boss 302 at full chat - puts a smile on my face every time and annoys the old ladies in the neighborhood even if just cruisin' along.

Gotta go with the VR6 as well. Had a few in the club I used to hang with with a Corrado and R32....Man with exhaust those things sound gorgeous.

Also lesser known and loved were the Ford Probe GT/Mazda MX-6 V6's with Greddy exhaust. I had a GT and the Greddy exhaust note was sweet sounding for 2.5 ltrs....

Also I love the pressurized V6 note of the old 80's classics Buick GN's/GNX's....Absolutely loved em.

So far none of them sounds really good. Either the exhaust sound is to low, too raspy. Hell the sti sounds way better and much deeper and that's a 4 banger. Hopefully in the future someone will make a good sounding exhaust. Something that is loud, deep, f1 ish sound. I don't know an sti on roids.

I started a thread on the best sounding cars of all time in the "other vehicles section":

Best *sounding* cars of all time

I didn't post any V6s, 'cause you all are doing a great job here.

The thing that drives me crazy about Porsches is that they just suck at idle. Cars that cost that much should be impressive at startup. They just sound like Veedubs.

Best sounding 6 is the RB26DETT inline-6 from the last generation GTR's. With cams they sound amazing.
