Nismo exhaust install possibly went wrong. Fitment issues from NismotoBase?
So I bought a low mile used Nismo exhaust from a forum member on here and nothing seems to be modified from factory. Awesome exhaust for the money IMOP. Seems to wake the car up a little. Or it could just be wishful thinking. So I paid a local shop around Columbus to swap my stock exhaust for the Nismo one that I purchased.
Everything seemed great until after a week or so, then I started to notice that one of the sides of the exhaust seems to stick out a 1/2 inch more then the other side of the exhaust. After I had the exhaust installed, one of the shop managers said everything mounted up perfect except one side, but it shouldn't effect anything. I took a few pictures but is this normal for the factory Nismo exhaust to not perfectly fit on the base model cars? I didn't read anything about the Nismo exhaust tips extending more then one another. Maybe I'm making to big of a deal out of things but I would like the exhaust to fit as close to factory as possible and it's starting to bug the **** out of me. I did notice (pictures below) on the driver side exhaust section, one of the exhaust peg bracket is just hanging not connected to anything. What do you think? |

Order this exhaust "insulator" from Amazon.
Walker Exhaust 35259 Hardware-Insulator : Amazon.com : Automotive Install it where the Nismo muffler hanger is just hanging. That should fix it. I installed a used Nismo exhaust on my base a few weeks ago. Knew about the difference ahead of time so I had this ready. Used the metal insert and bolt from the base insulator, so if the shop trashed it, you will need to source those. Since this one is about twice as long as the shorter one from the base muffler, it worked out perfect.

I think it's normal for it to stick out a little on one side, mine does that too. I have a 2009.

I had no idea or I would have had that ready to go. I'll have to look at the old exhaust to try and find the old fittings your referring to. I'm pretty sure the shop left them on. Thanks for the info.

I didn't have any fitment issues as far as the tips were concerned. They fit perfect.
Two of the hanger mounting points were not usable, the product linked above would make at least one of those usable again. Not sure on the passenger side one though. Either way, I ran without the two forward mounts (Muffler has 4 total, two front, two rear, the front ones didn't fit on mine) the entire time I had the system and never saw any signs of stress or otherwise. That tip fitment is concerning though. Mine definitely didn't look like that. |

Yeah, your method is plenty good enough if you just "have" to have it there haha.
Might be it just had the one, I thought it had another on the other side too, bad memory I guess. I ran both with a hanger and without at that position and the exhaust didn't fit any different without it. I feel very comfortable with just telling people to leave it off, it really isn't needed. |

I used the same bolt and sleeve from my stock base exhaust n the new insulator, installed in the original bolt hole.

There are 3 for a reason.
The two rears, are there to hang the muffler. The one on the forward drivers side can be used to adjust the yaw, as the mid-pipes support it. The 1 hanger on the chassis can be bent slightly, as can the "pin" on the muffler. Having that one missing would result in the OP's issue. If there were four, the muffler would be locked in a fixed position. |
