Stock cat?

Does anyone know what the smallest diameter inside the stock cats? I was wondering if the old soak them in kerosene and light them on fire until the insides crumble and fall out to make better flow would work? Just a thought...

:iagree: Test pipes are $100....why not just buy a set instead of making your own out of something you may need to use in the future lol.

Romulus1 01-20-2013 01:51 AM

you spent $30k+ on this car, please please please do it right and buy high flow cats or test pipes. I dont understand peoples need to half *** things. If you cant "afford" it or what ever, wait till you can or its in budget so its CORRECT

DEpointfive0 01-20-2013 02:04 AM

You know what... It's not a bad idea if Maine has REALLY strict smog laws, but doesn't do a sniffer test, but I somehow doubt that and I think the OP is being cheap, lol

OP, if you really want, give me $40 and your stock cats, I'll give you my resonated test pipes

DarkJak 01-20-2013 04:00 AM

Yeah, actual test pipes will give you better gains, sound better, and save weight. Plus, if you look in the for sale section, you'll be able to find used test pipes (often resonated) for under 150.

I'm not cheap, and i can def afford pretty much what ever i want to do with the car. I was just wondering if anyone has done this or heard of doing this on a Z. Its an old school trick i heard about, and was trying to see if it was just ********. Maybe i should have been more exact with what i said...

Never heard of this and I'm pretty sure no one has done it on their Z on this forum. Get yourself some good test pipes might I recommend Fast Intentions.

To be honest not something most would do as the feedback you've gotten already, But if you want to do that? Thats your discretion.

I would use a metal pole to bust out the ceramic honeycomb it should take you about half an hour to get it done.

I did it on my 350z. Not the way you are mentioning, but I did gut them. Its all the advantages of test pipes without the rasp and passes a visual inspection. I did it because my supercharged engine had a misfire and burned one up anyway, so I wanted to see how they would perform.

This sounds crazy.. but pretty cool.

No rasp on mine ;)

Momentum headers, Top Speed resonated test pipes, CNT Exhaust

Probably helps that test pipes are resonated, exhuast has 18" resonators and muffler canisters like the HKS exhaust lol.

I don't have rasp on mine either, and I'm straight pipes all the way to my two tiny glasspacks, but I don't operate my car below 4000 rpm, ever.

Just go with a testpipe. Eventually you will need the stock cats again to pass smog.
