Default Interest in a DIY Muffler Delete Pipes?

Well the track season is over and I have been crawling up the walls looking for something to do. This got me thinking about the one thing that really bugs me about the 370Z (with stock exhaust) at the track. The exhaust sound is so disappointing.

A quick review of Ebay motors shows cat back exhausts running from around $500 to as much as you wish to pay…But one company sells “short tails” for $300 which are just muffler delete pipes. Maybe I can do better…

My latest project is constructing a set of muffler delete pipes out of materials readily available at your local auto parts store (think crude bends and plenty of flexi pipe). I am about 50% complete and I can tell you that it can be done and for a price of around a little less than $100. The construction is very sturdy. And the sound…

Keep in mind that your local exhaust shop may be able to do a much nicer system for around the same money (I know that one member had a set done for $170). But where is the fun in that!

What do you think? Anyone interested?

Personally, I think the 370z deserves a higher class of exhaust than some flex pipe pepboys special.

Isn't visually appealing, but at the track, I would take the sound! Good job! Spend the extra money you have left over on tires.

Why are you tracking with a stock exhaust?
At least open it up a little with an eBay y-pipe if you're that... Economical?

Dollar wise, exhaust is low on my list. It always has to be 1) entry fee, 2) brake pads, 3) rotors, 4) tires, 5) synthetic fluids, 6) track sundries, and 7) gifts for my wife.

Remember, the point of my project was 1st to break my off season depression and 2nd to see if I could design a low buck muffler delete that anyone on the forum could replicate. I wanted to develop a solidly engineered muffler delete that could be installed easily and develop (quoting a previous poster) “beastly” sound. And I have done that.

Really, our cars sound so weak at the track with a stock exhaust. I am not interested in HP gains with this system.

Off course I could have used mandrel bends. And I suggest that if you wish to replicate a similar system please do. However, the cost of mandrel bends starts nearing a professionally welded system.

For all you hard parkers out there (if you don’t know what that means just check the urban dictionary) I understand that you will never get this "brah".

But I know that all you track guys will.

I will post the DIY sometime next week. You will see that I eliminated the flexi-pipe because it turned out to be a weak spot in the system.

And it really does sound bad a$$!

I paid $120 to have them cut the factory flanges off the tail section and also the tips, bend some new pipe and weld it back together minus the suitcase muffler and looks a bazillion times better than that for only $20 more. If you are scroungen for $20 then I dont know what to tell ya. **** I thought I was being cheap on what I did, but damn man you took it to a whole different level and look. At least mine looks factory.

But you could have done it your self. Do you ever watch Gears? What are you working on? You just don't get it.

I'm sorry brother, you're not going to get any love from any of us...

IMO you can't buy a 30k+ car and put a $12 exhaust on it...

This is even more ghetto than the washer mod (might want to look at that)

If you want it louder for a track and want to lose weight, just take the whole muffler off next time and call it a day

So I can assume you ordered ever part from nissans part counter, then put the Z you now own together like a model car? I have torn the whole rear trunk area of my car apart to remove the tailights and the front bumper to remove the headlights, but I personally dont have access anymore to a pipe bender nor a welder. I have done coilovers, f/r sways, rear LCA's, front upper a-arms, front lower tie bar, front upper tie bar, cat back exhaust, complete ES hyperflex bushing kit, distributer, coil pack, master fuel relay, ignitor, cap, rotor, fuel filter, then drove it to have a guy do the alignment on my other car, even when I know how to do a string alignment. Sometimes there are things that are best left to a person that has the tools and equipment. I have also done my friends konis with GC's, f/r sways, front upper/lower tie bar, rear upper/lower tie bars, cat back exhaust, then again drove it to get aligned. I am all for doing things on your own, but $20 extra vs that, come on dude. $65 alignment vs the sting method and risk destroying $1k in tires, I will spend the little extra money and make sure it is spot on. The justification vs the look on such beautiful car doesnt equate out to me.
