Is my exhaust broken!! PLEASE HELP!!
Ok so let me give you all the break down.. My exhaust set up is cnt hfc and top speed pro1 exhaust (single midpipe design) and thats it no other breathing mods or anythng... Ive have the exhaust on since June of this year and the hfcs since October.
the exhauast has sounded the same since day one, and obviously became louder after adding the hfcs. So today I was out getting a few things done (oil change, gym, shopping, and washed the Z). Not once today did I even get a chance to really push the car was in traffic a lot. Now the weird stuff!! So I gave the car a wash (hand wash) and after I finished up and started the car up to pull into the garage to my complete surpise my exhaust suddenly was about 5 times louder then it was 30 mins before I washed the car!! At first I thought it was nothing, but when I revved it and actually drove it HOLY S*** its loud!!!! Not like a loud of and exhaust leak or crack in the pipe or anything but take the tone it use to be and raise it by 5! I got a little worried and rushed over to my local tuning shop (JDS Motorsports) to have them throw it up on the lift and see whats going on. After a quick run down they found nothing wrong with the exhaust every bolt from the 3 bolts on top of the cats to the rear section was as tight as can be... Im so freaking confused and worried as to what could of happened? Are my mufflers blow out? is that possible? Did the exhaust simply break in and this is the tone its suppose to be? I will post a video once i get the chance.. Please can anyone help!?! Last edited by ts-c63; 12-17-2012 at 05:14 PM. |

I don't know how your muffler is designed, but back in The Good Old Days we'd say you blew the baffles out. Rust can do it. Backfires. If the damage isn't visible looking in the ends, I'm not sure how you would bench-test a muffler.

I did that but not rattle or anything... I dont care how loud it is outside the car cause it actually sounds pretty sick, its just how loud it got inside the cabin... i might just add an extra resanator to keep the tone down inside the cabin...
as for baffels thats exactly what one my my friends thats a tech said... If I can figure it out I think this is a sign to finally man up and get a FI exhaust haha |

I have the top speed true dual and I haven't put more than 3000 miles on it and both resonators were destroyed inside. I had my local shop replace them with a 3 inch single. Top speed is garbage their customer service is garbage and their parts are garbage. if I were you I would look into unbolting the mufflers and looking inside them and the mid resonator as well.

I would check if it is resting on the cross member close to the y-pipe. At first mine was not touching, then as the hangers streched over time it started to rest on the cross member and the exhaust got several times louder, especially inside the cabin as the viration is transmitted into the frame.

could it just have been the cold start? where the car generally has a different tone anyways?

Did you unplug the battery?
Do you have a tune? I heard that sometimes the cars ECU doesn't realize its had modifications done to it til a proper tune is made or you drive it a certain distance and the computer recognizes everything.. To me it just sounds like you have an aftermarket exhaust and HFC.. Its not that loud in my opinion. But then again, I have short tails so everythings loud.

When you can get a full CBE for $400... You have a problem... They sound ok at best on day one, then they start rattling and giving weird sounds... The cheapest I'd go is with a Megan exhaust, I have had/installed their 370Z exhaust on a totally different car (Infiniti FX50S), and damn the quality is good and it's still running strong with 8k miles... Than again, OP, if you like it that loud (which by looking at the video didn't seem THAT loud,) enjoy it |
