Questions Regarding Test Pipes

Does it really matter what brand you go with? I mean, they're all pretty similar right? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was offered a good deal on Megan test pipes. Thanks in advance.

edub370 09-24-2012 02:08 PM

I would say no (save for ark pipes. if u are just wanting a straight tp, then a pipe is a pipe

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 02:12 PM

thanks for the reply, but whats different about the ark pipes?

You're paying for the resonators honestly, the Arks and the Motordyne Art Test pipes have weird, big arse resonators:

Ark:

http://www.the370z.com/exhaust-intak...flow-cats.html

I have some Megan resonated ones, and they are great... My 2 problems with them is that the O2 bungs are kinda short (I had mine extended and I put stainless steel wool inside them [and you can't extend them that much]), and the flange has one thread, so you use an OEM bolt to tighten that corner of the flange... Use a BIT of threadlocker, or tighten that biotch tight when you do it up

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 04:46 PM

hey thanks for the reply. i can probably have a muffler shop move the p2 bung further and weld the old bung close right?

Nope, or they're going to rape you to do so... Megan uses 304 stainless steel, and it is not easily weldable... I think you'll have space to put "J" bung ones from eBay or whatever. My guys welded a 1/2" extension that all muffler shops have lying around in case someone asks for another 02 bung or something like that...

DEpointfive0 09-24-2012 04:53 PM

Oh, and if you do decide to use steel wool, use 304 steel wool or something, you want something that won't rust... If you need some, PM me your name and address and I'll send you some

Kingbaby 09-24-2012 04:54 PM

It's an exhaust system, meaning different parts yield different results!

Test pipes in genereal make the exhaust note louder!

So if you're just adding test pipes to the stock setup then your fine with whatever. After adding those megans test pipes....save for a complete setup cause adding anything else it will start to rasp and sound like a$$...

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 05:14 PM

oh got it...sounds like a lot of work going with megan test pipes. do all of the other test pipes have similar issues? i can get a set of used stillens for 200 picked up.

i have a greddy ti-c catback thatll be installed at the same time.

Kingbaby 09-24-2012 05:22 PM

I would recommend you put that on first and drive around see how you like it first.

WOW, you're going to deafen people, LOL!!!

It's really not a lot of work, I just took extra precautions not to get any CELs...

And I don't think Stillen makes test pipes unless someone is lying to you, or they JUST got released

DEpointfive0 09-24-2012 05:30 PM

Where in CA are you located???

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 05:43 PM

im located near pasadena. i wasn't aware of how loud the Greddy Ti-C with test pipes would be lol...is it really going to be that bad? i got a great deal on the Greddy Ti-C so i picked them up. I wanted to go with the ARK Grips originally.

I assume you bought them from the forum member that was selling it... It was a great deal... But yeah, I think its THE loudest, or close to the loudest exhaust you can buy for the 370Z... I'd frist install that and see how you like it, THEN decide on test pipes or HFC's
The other thing, test pipes smell like DEATH... No more driving with your windows down (or at least when you get to a stop sign, roll them up and click recycle air, LOL)

I have some Berk HFC's for sale if you want to go louder and get a little more HP

Kingbaby 09-24-2012 06:29 PM

The smell goes away guys....seriously, once you tune and break it in...it goes away!

Untuned however is a gas station

jcosta79 09-24-2012 06:31 PM

I have Megan test pipes and I love them.

Don't put steel wool in your exhaust. Save your money and get a tune if you're worried about getting a CEL.

Isn't the purpose of tuning to undo the leaning out of all your other breather mods? Wouldn't you then have MORE gas being burned/smelling like death?
LOL

You can do that too, lol I like leaving my sensors on though

probably not. i don't mind doing it, but i'll be under the car with 4 jackstands for at least an hour. i've got a muffler shop that will do it for $40.

Kingbaby 09-24-2012 07:17 PM

awesome...

in for videos

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 07:24 PM

will do, hopefully by this weekend. thanks again for chiming in everyone.

You do realize that the only job the rear 02 sensors have is to make sure that the cats are working properly, right? All they do is report a failure if they don't heat up to a preset temperature within a certain amount of time.

They don't "read" anything. At all.

$40? They must have never worked on a 370Z before.

Get that estimate in writing.

edub370 09-24-2012 07:59 PM

Lol @ the people bitching about the gas smell. Don't ever go around a muscle car, race track, or an car with big injectors at idle... If a lil gas smell gets u that bent outta shape ... Well... Get over it lol

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 08:17 PM

been around the car scene for a good amount of time. although ive never came out with a heavy hitter myself, i know quite a few people. long time friends/grew up with hasbak, phase 2, and a few shops. ive got some pull. no reason to doubt that i cant make it happen for $40. need special smogs? i get them for $45.

Just saying... It takes a fair bit of labor to do the test pipes. One of the bolts needs to be accessed from the engine bay and usually you need to remove part of the intake for easier access. $40 is an AWESOME deal.

Notsud 13 09-24-2012 08:28 PM

haha yea i know, im just saying too. i didnt realize that it involved removing the intake and what not, but it shouldnt make a big difference. ill be helping out with the install as well. thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, Jotech charged me 2 hours labor to do it, and it took every single minute of it to get it done.

Holy crap... I had some Mexican guy (not trying to be racist) do it for $80, he TRIED WD40 and (the other one) but since the guy was ghetto as hell and had a full muffler/repair shop he took his acetylene torch heated the nuts/bolts, sprayed water on them. Job done, you could undo the bolts by hand, lol

Kingbaby 09-24-2012 10:26 PM

+1

To test pipes being difficult! It's not getting to them, its the initial removal of the 'demon bolts'!

Ajobie 09-25-2012 04:13 AM

yes I will never forget the experiance me and my friend at work had at this, i got to his house at about 10 am, we took our time and did a cat back+swapped out for HFC. we didnt know what we were getting into, but luckily we are both jet engine mechanics and know a few tricks. we had it done in about three hours, and that was taking a break to eat some lunch. All in all im pretty happy with it, the combo I have sounds great and i would do it all over again.

Notsud 13 10-01-2012 08:47 PM

Got the greddy ti-c and megan test pipes installed. I'll post a video when I get a chance.

Its pretty loud lol.

I just did mine not too long ago. Did it all by myself (on a lift) and it took all of about 4.5 hours (with cleanup). I am very happy with the loudest damn Z east of the mississippi and I love the smell as well. Trying to figure out a tune solution so I can make the CEL go away.. I drove it 10 hours to NC and noticed that when the CEL was thrown it actually idles correctly as opposed to idling at 700rpms.

My short start up and idle video right after install.

370Z Purist 01-11-2013 11:31 PM

I did the test pipes with myself and a friend. Took about six hours, on two jackstands. Also replaced the Y pipe.

Extremely loud. I'll try to find my videos. I highly recommend you get a resonated test pipe set or HFCs. They'll get rid of the 3000 RPM rasp.
